Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Old friends, enemies, and allies continue their deadly game, unsure whether it will end in war or peace, in Bernobich's third River of Soul fantasy set in a Europe-like land of uneasily coexisting countries (after Passion Play and Queen's Hunt). Ilse Zhalina and Raul Kosenmark are lovers and spies. Enemies from Ilse's past, people she met randomly in passing, family members, and casual acquaintances both help and hinder Ilse as she makes her way out of Károví, back home to Melnek, and then to the king's palace in Duenne to reach Raul. During this journey, Ilse retraces her footsteps from three years ago and comes to terms with all that she'd done since she ran away from her father's home. Readers will be on the edge of the seats with every machination and twist, delighted as characters who were introduced in passing suddenly have their places and purposes revealed. The conclusion leaves fans waiting impatiently to know what happens to the Duke of Károví and Valara Baussay, the Queen of Morennioù; all will presumably be revealed in future volumes. (Nov.)

From Booklist

The third novel in Bernobich’s River of Souls series (Queen’s Hunt, 2012) finds Ilse Zhalina and Valara Baussey traveling back to Valara’s home of Morenniou on the heels of their defeat of the immortal King Leos. Valara needs Ilse’s help to reclaim her throne, but Ilse is longing for her lover, Raul Kosenmark, who has not perished in battle as she feared. Valera and Ilse accept shelter from Miro Karasek, who Valera is considering making her consort, but as the days pass on, Ilse’s desire to return to Raul in Veraene deepens. Raul discovers Ilse is alive, and he makes plans to visit his father’s court in the hopes of keeping peace in the kingdom in the wake of Leos’ fall. But upon his arrival, an old enemy has him arrested and is determined to do everything in his power to have Raul executed. Readers who have been following the love story of Ilse and Raul will find the resolution to their story a satisfying one. --Kristine Huntley

Format: Hardcover
As this is the final volume in the ‘River Of Souls’ trilogy, spoilers for the first two books are unavoidable. With that warning: King Leos is dead (permanently, one hopes) and the jewels have been reunited. Valara Baussay is bound for Morennioù, Raul Kosenmark is off to serve the king and Ilse Zhalina is caught between oaths and allegiance. She and Raul are still doing all they can to prevent war and, again, the obstacles in their path are numerous.

Secrets, lies, assassins and spies will try to stop them. Though neither Ilse nor Raul believe themselves to be selfless, they overcome their personal ambitions and doubts in order to serve their people. This time they will be rewarded for their sacrifices, making the end of this chapter of the greater story worthwhile for the characters and the reader.

It’s the characters that separate the ‘River Of Souls’ novels from the other fantasy on the shelf. Well, that and the covers. The art by Scott Grimando is gorgeous. Back to the characters. Sexuality and gender are fluid concepts and society doesn’t question either. The women are strong without being unfeminine and the men are not written dispassionately. Pen and sword can be effectively wielded by either sex, without discrimination. What is, is, which is very refreshing.

This is not to say individual characters do not struggle with who they are. They do. Writer Beth Bernobich has created a world where the usual rules and prejudices do not apply, which means she doesn’t have to write out any objections to certain choices. She can concentrate on the story, which gives the narrative a seamless feel. It also allows her characters to make choices they might not be able to in our world. Love can win out, which allows the characters to forge strong alliances.

The final book in the River of Souls trilogy delivers with an exciting, tense, and satisfying conclusion. The characters face real challenges and suffer real losses. You will empathize with them.

Beth Bernobich keeps the story grounded, but she allows her imagination free reign in all the right ways. Magic use is both practical and wondrous, and the magical realm of Anderswar is awe-inspiring.

If you liked the first two books in this series, "Passion Play" and "Queen's Hunt", you will love this one. Beth Bernobich's voice is one you will be glad you heard.

I've just finished the book!

Beth Bernobich's effort yields a satisfying end to her "River of Souls" trilogy. Beth's world is one of magic, romance, plots, political intrigue, coupled with high adventure!

Good job, Beth!

I rate "Allegiance (River of Souls)"...Four stars! (Recommended! If you get a chance, read Bernobich's (1) "Passion Play" and (2) "Queen's Hunt" - Books 1 and 2 in the "River of Souls" trilogy - before reading "Allegiance")

Allegiance is the concluding book of the River of Souls series. The series is romantic, political, complex, with layers and layers of characters and plots within plots. *This* is the kind of book I love to read, and Bernobich does a great job.

It's also rather nice to read a fantasy world where the game settings are not all characters = default straight white male. A captain of the guard is as likely to be a woman as a man, the sexuality is fluid (and you guys know how much I love that) and people do terrible and/or honourable things for good and bad reasons, where choices *matter*.

The girl we met in Passion Play has come totally into her own, and she's amazing - this final Ilse is still wanting to run, perhaps, still driven by her fears, but acknowledging these things and facing them. Also shut up while I squee for the romance. Squee!

(Also, can I squee for my other favourites - Heloise and Nadine? Because, gah I want to see more stories with them too, *evil grin*)

So yes, I do love me this series and I want more books set in this world.
