I believe that anyone who may have had problems with these must have ignored the simple instructions.

I've used Howard Leight R-01526 Impact Sport Electronic Earmuffs for years when shooting 45ACP, 230g. They get the job done, no complaints & seemed comfortable enough.

Started firing a 223 AR recently & discovered that these muffs were a nuisance/distraction while establishing cheek weld to the stock. Who knew? This sent me researching & trying out other ear protection devices, even though the sound protection was fine.

Tried the two-colored cones that screw into the ears as well as several kinds of sponge inserts. All were covered by my muffs within minutes of firing the AR. Forget the 45.

Then I took a chance on the Allen Ultra-Light Sound Sensor with the AR. Think I heard a low pop somewhere. Was that my AR? Why yes it was. Quiet compared the pricey muffs and they didn't interfere with cheek weld. Sweet, but how about that noisy 45?

Talk about a difference in sound. It was like firing a different firearm; just a muted pop. Way softer than with the muffs. Had no idea a 45 could be so quiet.

Six hours later, on wrap-up, searched my car and bag looking for where I stashed my headset. Had to have stashed it since it wasn't on my head, right? Wait, it was still on my head, still plugged into my ears, under my hat. Good thing my head is screwed on or I may never have found them.

So, they may be foam, not silicone, but they do filter out gunshot noise, they are comfortable (even for small ear canals) and they are not "cheap crap". Looks like Howard's Muffs are retired, even for the 45.

The box states that it is NRR 26. Be aware that it is not NRR 28 as is advertised on this site! This is misleading and amazon needs to fix this typographical error. I contacted Amazon returns about this, they kindly sent a replacement and the new one was still NRR 26, so I have come to the conclusion that they have listed the product description incorrectly here. I wish they would fix this because it is giving false information.

In regards to the performance... so far it works fine. It is not bulky like other types of hearing protection, it is more convenient. You can fold it and put it in your backpack or even wear it around your neck when not in use.
It does lower sounds but it does not make them vanish.
It seems to mute clock ticking and humming sounds but other sounds are just lowered a little but are still audible. It at least seems to protect the ears if you were walking in the street and a fire truck decided to pass by. You still of course hear the sirens but it is at least a few points lower. You can hear conversation and it seems to distort some sounds like a wind tunnel at times...not sure if that is a good thing or not.

It is comfortable to wear and it works great for people who usually have trouble with the commonly known disposable ear protection. This thing is much easier and saves the hassle of having to deal with disposables, especially if you have small ear canals :)

UPDATE:
Unfortunately it broke easily in the area where it connects to the top due to its thinner plastic in that area. So It is not as durable as hoped :( but it worked okay while it lasted.

Very light weight protection, perfect for outdoor shooting in the summer heat! Very good at protecting your hearing from the big guns shot an an outdoor range. I plan on buying more simply for backup and spares for friends to use. I highly recommend this product!

I used to wear ear plugs and headphones at the shooting range, but not any more. Allen Sound Sensors work great for me. Make sure to follow the instructions. They fold up into a nice compact unit to fit in your range bag or shirt pocket.

I am a professional furniture builder and I have tried tons of hearing protection solutions over the
years and I have to say that I was less than thrilled with these. My main and really only complaint with
these is the fact that the part you insert into your ears is fairly large and did not work for me at all.
I am not sure if I have unusually small ears or this is the way they are suppose to be, but for me they
were quite uncomfortable. I did go over the instructions a few times to make sure I was doing things right
but despite all my efforts they are just not a good fit for me. Hopefully a slightly smaller diameter version will
be available for these in the future as the concept is brilliant and does work.

I was looking for a lightweight headset that I could wear easily around my neck when at the range. This seemed to fit the bill. It wears comfortably but... only works about 50% of normal full headsets. When outside in an open area it worked fine with my 9mm and 45acp. But when I moved into a covered area and fired my .45, my ears were ringing. I had to switch to my old full size headset. I will only use this headset when outside in an open area in the future, which probably means I'll never use it. Wasted money spent.

Used at the shooting range, very effective at reducing noise. Makes someone's snoring beautiful to the ears at night. This just basically kills loud, annoying noises. Highly recommended.

They will let too much percussion come through. My ears have rang after using them (with 9mm and 12 ga). I would not recommend them.
