Like the other shoes I already have from AE, is this pair a perfect fit and of exelent quality.
The brown welt and trim are just brown enough to be distinctive, but not so light as to be tacky or cheap-looking.
They fit perfectly and I recommend everyone with wide feet give them a try.

Product Description

The McTavish Oxford offers a new take on the classic street shoes. Features a wax infused leather, double oak toasted leather soles, and a classic American styling that is experiencing a resurrection in the men's fashion industry. Paired with casual clothing, these styles give off a fresh, young vibe for the modern urban man.

The McTavish from Allen Edmonds recalls a time when men believed a coat and tie was considered casual wear. The burnished and brogued leather upper carries the weight of pure tradition though the ages, while a lace up front ensures a perfect fit. The leather beneath sole delivers a steady confident step from the boardroom to the social club and everywhere between.

These shoes are dressy enough to go with a suit (I got the black with the brown stitching) and with business casual (e.g. nice slacks and shirt). The AE site talks about them going with jeans, but I don't think the look is right for that. I was worried when I ordered them that they would be too casual and not be able to be worn with a suit, but I was relieved when I saw them on and with nice blue, grey, or black dress slacks. They are not a young man's look, but I doubt many 25 year old's are wearing $300 AE shoes anyway, even though they probably should as they would last them a long, long time.

An important note on these, which relates to the sizing. Order a full size smaller than what you would normally wear. For example, in running shoes, I wear a size 11, and in some dress shoes I may wear a 10.5. I knew these ran big so I got the 10.5 instead of 11. Wow, they were just too big. I returned to AE - and their customer service is excellent - and got a size 10 and they fit great. I have been wearing J&M shoes for 20+ years but am switching out to AE shoes when I buy new ones as AE's are made right here in the good ol' USA.

A minor note, you should use saddle soap on these instead of black polish, as the black polish would stick to the brown stitching and ruin the look of the shoe.

$300 may seem like a lot for a pair of shoes, but if you treat them right, such as using shoe trees, they will last you 15+ years. Great product. The matching belt is the Lamar, which is about $100. Note that the belt is 38mm wide instead of 35mm so it is a little wider than a normal dress belt and may not fit your belt loops as well in your pants.

....another wonderful pair of shoes from Allen Edmonds. Firstly, I have six pairs of AE shoes and none of them are oversized. As usual, they are wonderfully made and of the highest quality. A beautiful, more casual style than most and perfectly at home with a pair of jeans. These shoes will still look great long after your average Chinese or India made department store shoe is in the landfill. Buy Allen Edmonds and you're buying long lasting quality.

UPDATE 9/29/2013 - This has quickly become one of my favorite pairs of shoes. So much so that I have ordered a second pair in gray.

I love this shoe! Allen Edmonds makes a quality shoe that will truly last for a very long time. They look sharp, are made of good quality materials and feel sturdy. My only gripe is they are larger than other shoes. I normally wear a size 11. In this particular shoe, a 10.5 would have been the better choice. The size issue is the only reason I gave 4 stars.

I purchased these last week and they are my new favorite pair of shoes. I have three other pairs of Allen Edmonds that I've acquired over the years and they are all well made shoes with classic style that will last for years. My oldest pair was a Christmas gift I received in 1998. They are the Sanford cap toe oxfords and they are still holding up very nicely today (I've had them resoled once).

I got the McTavish in the black wax infused leather (called "dark black" on this site). They have all the good looks of a wing tip oxford, but the waxed leather and the slightly contrasting sole and stitching give this shoe a more casual look that can be dressed up or down. I've gotten several compliments on these shoes, as I do with all of my AE shoes. Sizing on these particular shoes seems to be fairly accurate, but possibly a bit on the narrow side as is the case with most Allen Edmonds shoes. If you're not sure, I recommend going somewhere you can physically try on these shoes. Or make sure you can easily return them at no cost if the fit isn't right. My shoes felt a bit snug on my right foot, but the next size up was too big. After wearing these a few times they feel just perfect. I simply love them.

If you take care of your shoes, and repair them when needed, these shoes will last for years and is worth every penny of the purchase price.

Very well built and attractive design. Classic yet edgy. The pair I received has drying cracks in the leather. Since the shoe is new and has "waxy" look to the finish, this didn't seem right. I normally wear a 9 1/2 D dress shoe and a 10 in some styles. When trying the 9 1/2. Even thicker insoles and/or thick socks didn't help very much. This one fits me well as a 9D.

The leather is excellent, the stitching is perfect, and the overall look of the shoe is incredible. The contrast stitching on the black and brown pair isn't nearly as high as in the product picture; in natural lighting, the brown stitching only serves to accentuate the warm oak colored sole. They'll serve me well in all situations from casual to formal, and I'm excited to use them for years to come. I've gotten more compliments on these shoes than any other pair I've ever owned.

On the other hand, be sure to order a full size down to ensure an appropriate fit. I normally wear a 9.5 in boots, sneakers, boat shoes, etc. but ordered an 8.5 on the recommendation of other reviewers. The 8.5 fits perfectly. In short, I would highly recommend this specific pair, as well as any Allen Edmonds product.
