Editorial Reviews

From backwoods barbecues and community gatherings, Allen Stone emerges to share personal melodies, telling his tales of life after just 24 years. Originally getting his start singing at his father s church in small-town America, Stone s intense passion for music was instantly ignited by the greats of soul music (Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin) and eventually by the confessional lyrical fashion of the 60's -70's singer/songwriters.

Since releasing his self-titled album digitally several months ago, Allen Stone has sold more than 16,000 units at iTunes completely independent of a label. ATO Records will now release Allen Stone's self-titled CD for the first time in physical records stores on July 31st. The album will also be released on vinyl for the first time along with a bonus 10' featuring exclusive new tracks.

I had the privilege of seeing Allen Stone a couple of times in Seattle and he quickly become one of my favorite live performers. His quirky animations and sometimes painful looking facial expressions are a testament to how much heart and soul he puts into his music. What came to my mind immediately was that this is not his hobby or career ,rather music is in his soul --an intrinsic part of his being. You feel honored to have him perform for you. A rarity and a true gem.

I cannot recall a time that I have been as eager about an album release as I have been for this one, and I was not disappointed.

This album is about to explode. Allen Stone has become a buzzword lately, as well it should! Stone is a phenomenal performer, and this album is a true work of art. You can dance your ass off to his first track "Sleep" as it sets you up for an amazing compilation of songs. All of them are wonderful and diverse. My personal favorite is "Contact High" which he has mentioned in his shows is about just putting down your phone for a minute to talk to a person right in front of you! Brilliant. I recommend this album to anyone who would like to hear the sound that Jason Mraz and Stevie Wonder mixed together would make.

Allen Stone is the real deal if you like soul music. His voice is amazing, a cross between Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye, and his phrasing and pitch are top notch. His songwriting has it covered also...Motown, Memphis, and Philly are all fondly referenced on this disc, but it is an homage, and not simply copycat stuff, nice lyrics, simple but meaningful...great arrangements and tight musicianship. Beautifully done. There is not a clunker on the disc, but my personal favorite songs are the opener "Sleep", the mid tempo "Celebrate Tonight", and the Stevie Wonderesque "Contact High". If you want to see what this guy is about, check out his episode of "Live from Daryl's House", where he duets on 6 tunes with the great blue-eyed soul singer Daryl Hall. Allen Stone is the real deal. Buy this disc today.

A music industry friend played me Allen Stone's FB page over Skype and it blew my mind. I've listened to it for a week on FB and realized, "I can't be without this music" and I'm headed out of the country. Can't wait to see him live (though I have seen a video of him live from his mother's living room - fantatic). Great music!

Well newcomer isn't the perfect word to describe Allen Stone, but basically he is. I can certainly understand Allen for independently distributing his music through indie labels and online. There are a lot of talented singer/songwriter/musicians out there with a lot of soul and funk who have the ability to bring the music out of it's often admitted duldrums. Trouble is that once you get into the big recording companies, the results will almost invariably be the same. Unless your personal constitution is incredibly strong in the soul world now? Well in comes the autotune, the half dressed ladies and the foul mouthed guest rappers. So essentially soul/funk artists in this day and age have had to do what the socially minded hip-hop community had to do in the late 1980's. And that's to abandon the possibility of huge commercial attention. With the advent of the internet as an enormous musical promotion force in the last decade and a half,it's given the opportunity for artists to promote their offerings in new and often more humanistic ways that aren't all about commerce. And that is part of what Allen Stone represents.

One listen to this particular release, distributed by ATO Records and one can tell, both as a vocalist and songwriter, that Mr.Stone has come to absorb everything that would've been a major influence to him. The soul music of 60's and 70's Motown,Chicago and in particular Memphis are particularly high on his book. The title song begins the album on an excellent note with a shuffling, gospel drenched soul/funk/blues groove. "Celebebrate Tonight" continues with that very elastic HI style funky soul groove which continued with "Contact High" as well.

Allen Stone is an astonishingly talented singer, songwriter, musician and performer. Every track is wonderful. His musical style is blues meets conscience meets social consciousness, plus kindness and humor. His range is outrageous. He's like a mix of Earth Wind & Fire, plus Janis Joplin, plus Stevie Wonder, plus PURE MAGIC, which is Allen Stone. This kid is 24 and he IS the music. Watch his videos on Youtube. He nearly levitates. Treat yourself. Buy this record. He's delightful and amazing.

A soulful record that is gaining traction among those in the know, Allen Stone's self-titled album is sure to put a smile on any listener's face. From the opening track, a bouncy number called "Sleep," to the closing strains of "Unaware," Stone never relents in his vocal assault. He has a voice that engages the listener, evoking memories of 1970s soul mixed with elements of classic soft rock.

The album has been available for a few months, so if you overlooked it upon its initial release, do not pass up the opportunity to purchase it now. Highlights include "Sleep," "Celebrate Tonight," and "Say So." Allen Stone is a self-proclaimed "hippie with soul," and he has a bright future ahead of him if he stays the course.
