I actually bought this cookbook for myself, a gluten- and dairy-free adult. The recipes are divided into easy-to-find sections, and in between there are loads of little helpful tidbits about the ingredients. I love the idea of simple recipes that don't need modification to make them safe for me to eat, and while some of the recipes do call for corn, the author has included several ways to modify those recipes to make them totally allergy free.

I have two problems with this book:

1. Some of the recipes aren't what I would call healthy, especially considering this is a book aimed at kids. While the author does include some low-sugar recipes, there are also quite a few that call for vegetable shortening, and there are no alternatives for that listed.

2. I've had trouble with some of the recipes not cooking up very well, in particular the cookies, fritters, and black bean burgers. I've been cooking GF/DF for a year now and usually do pretty well, but even after attempting some of these recipes several different times they're just not working. Because of that I'm to the point now where I'm using this book only for ideas, then looking to other sources for actual recipes, which kind of defeats the purpose of owning the cookbook in the first place.

Not sure I would recommend this book as the main source for a family trying to cook allergy-free, but it does work as a source for those who are in need of some inspiration and new ideas.

Great cookbook! I have been cooking allergy free for my son for approx 2 years now. He is allergic to eggs, soy, dairy, wheat and tree nuts. It is hard to find a cookbook that is sensitive to all of the top 8 allergens. This one does, with the exception of just a couple of recipes. I purchased this cookbook to find some new ideas. I have started to notice that the varying cookbooks tend to rely on one specific type of gluten free flour. This one is rice flours and tapioca flours which can have a little grittier taste. The last cookbook I used it was oat flour (Sophie Safe) and those recipes tend to crumble. It is nice to have a few new recipes and to try new ingredients to see which ones work for you. I still love Sophie Safe, but am enjoying this cookbook just as much! If you cook for someone with allergies, you know how challenging it can be. I would recommend this cookbook highly!! Good luck!!

My family avoids gluten, dairy, eggs and we try to keep things low sugar. It was so nice to find a cookbook where we could make almost every recipe! I was really hoping to find some meal ideas in this cookbook, but unfortunately my kids haven't liked any of the meal recipes I've tried from there. However, this cookbook has been very helpful for me in the snack department, which has always been a struggle! My kids love putting the snacks together with me and enjoying the end result. They will frequently open up the book when it comes to snack time, looking for the next thing to make. Most of the ideas are relatively easy and healthy as well. Many of the snack recipes manage to sneak in some good veggies like spinach, green beans, celery and carrots. For the snack ideas alone I think this book is well worth the purchase.

Truthfully, if you have more than one child with more than one food allergy or sensitivity, you really have to take what you can get in the way of cookbooks. At first, I thought this one was okay. There are some good ideas for dinners in it, and some interesting solutions to snack foods. The more recipes I try though, the more irritated I get. My biggest complaint is the baked goods. Ugh. No matter how pretty and fluffy they looked in the picture, they have so far all turned out to be gummy, gritty bricks OR a mess of random ingredients that do not hold together AT ALL. If you know your way around gluten-free baking, it is possible to adapt the recipes and make them more appetizing. I would definitely not recommend this one to people who are trying gluten-free baking for the first time. My other complaint is that this author must have a really different idea of what "low sugar" than I do. Some of the baked goods (even the non-dessert ones) are so sugary that I find them inedible. The recipes also tend to be very high-fat. Overall, I'm pretty disappointed in this one.

We've made a number of the recipes in this book for our severely food-allergic daughter. Although we've had success with many of the recipes, the recipes are poorly written and often difficult to follow. Steps are omitted, cooking times are left out, and ingredients are even left out of the directions altogether.

The recipe for Harvest Soup, for example, calls for 3 tablespoons of olive oil, but the directions do not indicate when the olive oil is supposed to be added. The recipe also calls for two apples, but does not say whether they should be peeled and cored (presumably they should) and how they should be chopped. The Beef Broccoli Noodle recipe turned out well, but only because we adjusted the proportions significantly. We put in 3x the amount of broccoli called for, for example, and we could have used even more. An estimate of how long the meat might take to cook and how long the sauce might take to thicken would have been extremely useful. The Savory Muffin recipe says that the recipe makes 24 muffins, but we only got 12 small muffins out of it.

My partner and I are experienced cooks, so we've managed to make a lot of these recipes work, but it's frustrating to have to constantly improvise as we go. For those who are not at home in the kitchen, I think that these recipes would be very difficult to follow.

i have a 4 1/2 year old picky eater who is also allergic to eggs. we have tried so many different books and she loves this one. now she can have birthday cake and cookies and the alternative mayo is awesome. i look forward to cooking every recipe.

I almost bought this book for it's gluten-free, and nut-free content, but in looking at the sample pages, I noticed coconut is listed as an ingredient.

I recently got the cookbook b/c my daughter has multiple food allergies as well as some feeding issues. The first recipe we made was incredible. The food is so easy to make and the recipes are simple. Yes there are some ingredients that are uncommon, but its easy to leave them out. I found it nice to be able to modify the recipes without scarficing taste. This book is becoming a staple in our house.

Some of the other reviews argue that it relies on rice flour alot and yes it does. However, it also uses alot of other flours, as well as giving substitution ideas in the recipe itself and the forward. In my opinion, people need to realize that if you are going to be cooking completely allergy friendly, you will be using a variety on non-mainstreamed ingredients.

I just got this book last week and have made 5 recipes. So far, all have been winners. Love that I don't have to make any subs - unless I choose to solely for taste preference. That being said, these recipes easily stand on their own. They are simple, fast and very tasty for kids and adults alike. Yay!

So far, this is the best allergy friendly cookbook I've bought. We have two allergic boys ages 5 and 2. This book provides different types of main dishes, breads, treats, etc. and it is all stuff that kids like! I can't wait to try more!
