5.0 out of 5 stars A Reader, March 12, 2007
It's a very informative book. I like to reference it whenever I can to remind me of all the things to avoid. I have an older version of this book and this updated version really opened my eyes to alternative methods to helping me with my allergies. Although some of their methods may be unconventional to some, at least they give you all the options that are available to allergy suffers like me. The medicine that doctors give you only treat the symptoms they don't help you in the long run. This book reaches beyond the medical field into alternative methods that many people don't think about.
I didn't realize that corn was in so many things. It's in more items than wheat is. Anyone with wheat allergies know that it's hard to avoid. Corn is even harder to avoid, it's in almost every processed food item. This book lists all the items to look out for which contain corn, wheat, soy, ect. It's a must read for anyone wanting to learn more about allergies and what to expect.

1.0 out of 5 stars The system wouldn't allow me to give it zero stars..., October 24, 2005
By Jimhy (Kentucky) - See all my reviews
I've had a difficult case of rhinitis lately. I read much of this book hoping to find helpful information. I'm sure that some of what's in this large volume is useful, but much of the diagnoses and treatment recommendations have little or no support in the medical or scientific community. Multiple Chemical Sensitivity/Environmental Illness is heavily promoted as a cause of sickness, although the AMA and other medical associations don't recognize any such condition. The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology has a nice position statement about the subject on its website, and a convincing refutation of the theory can be found in a 1996 article by Michael Fumento in Reason Magazine (Reasononline).

The book seems as much a polemic against industrial society and modern living as it is a medical self-help book.

The authors work in a practice together, or at least did at the time the book was written. One of them is apparently a physician, but she doesn't refer to herself as an allergist.

If you like to be frightened and prefer the opinions of some alternative therapists to those of the medical community, then buy this book. But be prepared to position the headboard of your bed to the north so as to take advantage of the electromagnetic polarity of the earth, to remove all electrical appliances from your bedroom, and to detoxify yourself of pollutants through the administration of coffee enemas. Yes these are among the many suggestions in the book. The authors don't entirely tell you to have the amalgam fillings removed from your head; they at least cite the consensus opinion that the extent of mercury exposure is harmless. But they give equal time to the opinions of the small minority who claim that such fillings are toxic.

Allergies adversely affect the quality of life for many people. Sufferers want to understand the causes of their symptoms and how to avoid them. In my opinion, they would be better served elsewhere.
