Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS The skimpy story line in this two-word ( Alley Oop! ) concept book involves an alligator who climbs on top of his mouse friend. They are joined by an assortment of other animals (all wearing numbers) to build a pyramid. When elephant joins them, their pyramid staggers under his weightand then topples when butterfly alights on the tip of elephant's trunk. The small, cartoon-like illustrations are confusing and unattractivethe numbers are often obscured by parts of the animals' bodies, and young children will have a difficult time determining how many animals are in the jumbled, messy pile of sneakered feet and bulging eyes. Corbett's What Number Now? (Dial, 1982), Little Numbers (Viking, 1984) by Rodney Peppe or Molly G. Bang's Ten, Nine Eight (Greenwillow, 1983) are far more attractive counting books. Strike Alley Oop! from your " must buy " list. Louise M. Zuckerman, San Francisco Public Library
