A sadly neglected classic,

Peter Mayne's evocative account of his time spent in Marrakesh in the 50s is a wonderful read full of wry observations, charming vignettes, and some genuinely funny incidents. Within the pages of this book, the reader gets to know the real Marrakesh beyond the tourist facades and it is a fascinating world. I would gladly exchange the whole output of tedious self-aware travel writers like Theroux, Thubron and their ilk for a paragraph of Mayne's succinct prose. This is a book for those who want to get to know the timeless Moroccan character and who also delight in the art of real travel writing which is now sadly lost to us.
