Editorial Reviews

There's just a very thin line between art and kitsch, but there are some innovative bands operating smartly near, but never beyond it. Among those are Ancient Bards, managing that balancing act with ambitious grace. Some say Ancient Bards are somehow like a "more sophisticated" Rhapsody that wouldn't do the sextet justice. Ancient Bards are definitely versatile enough to deliver their musical visions without merely being copycats. Their debut album, "The Alliance Of The Kings", is impressive proof of this and will be a surprise for those with a love of Epic-Metal with classy arrangements.

Think Blackmore's Night fused with Metallica and Queen producing the CD. Excellent. Bought it on a whim, not knowing what to expect and was thrilled. Can't wait for Pt. Two.

I saw a link to this group when I checked out Alestorm. This is an example of talent that few have probably heard or seen... a perfect example of why it's worth the effort to search for music via the web. The vocals, instrumental virtuoso, and stories are top notch.

Reviewed by Thayne Warner. I guess that makes me "GameDad."

Ancient Bards was a wonderful, serendipitous find. Simply put, the music is magical.

Let's cut to the chase. Sara Squadrani imbues the admittedly very proficient, entertaining, high-quality instrumental music with the powerful--VERY powerful enchantment of her voice. No wilting flower--no wailing waif--no winsome lass. No! Sara's voice weaves her spells with a punching, pounding potency. I am no music expert, or even connoseur of power metal, but she has the most powerful female METAL voice I have heard. And beats most males for actual power, as well -- not counting the Cookie Monster growling guys, of course, but then again, they don't sing! And does she sing! Soaring, unapologetic, and, simply put, purely wonderful.

And again, I cannot stress enough the strong proficiency of her bandmates. I will be the first to admit that I love vocals more than anything else in all genres. But Daniele Mazza--the conductor of this pounding orchestra and, I am given to understand, the main composer--provides excellent direction.

To be clear--this is Power Metal in the vein of [Flames of] Rhapsody--and thus laden with fairly predictable storylines (at least in this album), with somewhat cardboard-flat characters, and some strange lyrical content. But you won't notice, because Sara is singing it, and she makes it all sound fantastic. Plus, if I wanted a richly nuanced novel, with complex characters and a well-researched and edited storyline, I'd be reading, you know, a book.

This is in good fun. And, after listening to it probably about 30-40 times straight now, I am still enchanted and enthralled by it.

This is a beautiful album, packed with energy, drama, and passion. I am not especially well-versed in the genre, so I don't know whether to call this symphonic metal, power metal, et cetera, but it is one of the most impressive pieces of music I've heard all year. There is nothing dark or depressing about this music. In fact, it is almost festive at times, with a bit of a medieval/Renaissance Fair flavor. Fresh, fun, and just pure enjoyment to listen to. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Ancient Bards to anyone who likes hard-driving rock music with a whimsical fantasy twist.

There's a bit of spoken word/growling nonsense on one of the tracks, but that can easily be skipped.
