Book Description

November 1, 2004

Multistakeholder processes are now recognized as crucial public participation tools in a variety of fields, including health, housing, community economic development, transportation and more. Nonprofits in these fields are frequently being asked to collaborate with community and government but lack guidance for doing so. This book—outlining why and how to develop such organizations, how they can be most effective, and the special nature of power and leadership involved—is the only book available to facilitate this process.

Joan M. Roberts is an award-winning organizational development consultant who provides training workshops on governance and community development. She has over 20 years experience designing and facilitating multistakeholder processes in housing, health promotion, municipal land use, and community development. She lives in Toronto.

More About the Author

Author Biography
Joan M Roberts is a consultant, trainer and writer born and based in Toronto Canada. She has a very eclectic background that has provided her with a unique perspective on the world of inter- organizational collaboration and social change.

Gifted in bringing clarity and structure to organizations, Joan has worked in labour and community organizing, social housing, public health, was elected as a city councillor and for the last 13 years has run her own training and consulting business for government and the non-profit sector. As government and non profits started to collaborate to address complex social problems, Joan developed tools and processes for collaborative organizations that are in use all over the world.

In 2004 she wrote Alliances, Coalitions and Partnerships: Building Collaborative Organizations and in 2010, Governance for Collaboratives: A Guide to Resolving Power and Conflict Issues. Both books are handbooks chocked full of tools and information to help collaborative practitioners and members develop productive and successful collaboratives.

If you are involved with transorganizational systems (like associations, trade groups etc.) this is a very valuable resource. It helps you understand the dynamics of such groups and foresees the challenges you will have.
