"Don't go over there, Nora." He sounded tired. "God knows this is bad enough. It'll be worse over there."

She looked at him, pulling free of his arm. His eyes were turned across the rooftops to the fires in the city. He seemed distant already.

"I can't stay in London. The story is over there."

He snagged two cigarettes from his pocket, and the flare of his lighter revealed a tight smile. Her hand trembled, and he stilled it with his own. "What won't you do for your damned stories and that damned ambition?"

She took a deep drag, and the smoke gave her time to gather courage. "For a long time all I had was ambition. The big stories, the guaranteed bylines. I never figured the future would be much different. Now I'm not so sure."

For a long moment he didn't move, and she found herself holding her breath. She let the air out softly when he reached for her, gently cupping her face in his hands. His lips were warm but barely touched hers.

Elizabeth Quinn and Anstance Tamplin are pseudonyms of Beth Quinn Barnard, who grew up in East Rochester, New York, and has been a professional writer of news and novels, and a teacher of journalism, fiction, and composition since 1976. A graduate of Skidmore College and Boston University, she's lived in Grants Pass, Oregon, since 1983 with her husband, Jeff Barnard, a reporter with the Associated Press. Her children, Nate and Nellie, are grown, but she and Jeff made sure they were Red Sox fans before setting them free.
