WW2 Allied Commanders at a Glance, January 7, 2001
This review is from: Allied Commanders of World War II (Men-at-Arms) (Paperback)
This is a relatively small book to cover the prominent Commanders of the Allied Forces. It includes commanders from USA, UK, France, USSR, Canada and Poland, each with about 300 words of narrative describing their military career. B/W photographs and colour-plates of these commanders are also included. An interesting book to read because you can quickly get to know in brief the major military players in WW2.

Nice complement to German Commanders book, July 25, 2004
This review is from: Allied Commanders of World War II (Men-at-Arms) (Paperback)
A nice complement to the similar volume on German commanders.
The main text deals with a variety of Allied commanders; as with the German book the emphasis is on combat commanders of the land forces, with attention also paid to staff officers and combat officers of the naval and air services.
The main personalities discussed in the text are:
Harold Alexander
Claude Auchinleck
Omar Bradley
Andrew Cunningham
Miles Dempsey
Hugh Dowding
Dwight Eisenhower
Courtney Hodges
Douglas MacArthur
Bernard Montgomery
George S. Patton, Jr.
William Slim
Archibald Wavell
Georgi Zhukov
Many other commanders are featured in photo captions or the captions to the colour plates, from the Canadian Crerar to many expatriate Polish and French commanders, Vinegar Joe Stilwell, and other luminaries. No commanders from the 1939-40 period seem to be included.
The historical portraits are concise yet rich in detail; colour plates are well done - resemblance to the historical characters is very good, and colours and bright and show off well the various campaign ribbons - a feat of research in itself!
A very nice overall look at some key players in the Allied armies; emphasis has been placed on British, Commonwealth and US land forces. Some mention of naval commanders, very little on the air force. Nice mix of supreme/theatre commanders, army group, army, and corps commanders. Staff officers like Marshall, Montague, Brooke et al seem not to have been included in favour of combat commanders.
