This product works well. I've had temps in the low 20s and haven't seen any sign of freezing water. You do need to keep your eye on the water level as it does seem to speed up evaporation. Been using this for my 3 chickens and I generally have to fill it up 2x a day. One caveat is that I don't remember reading anywhere on the web page before purchase that this item needs to be plugged directly into an outlet. However, it did say so on the instructions when I received it. I've been using a short extension cord with no problems.

Update: Used this bowl the whole winter and experienced temps in the single digits. The hens still had their water. I'm happy with this purchase.

Update 2011: I thought by now it would have quit after being exposed to the elements for 3 winters and my extension cord setup, but it is still working just the same as day one.

It's still a little early to tell if this will do the job in really cold temps. It's only reached a low of 23 degrees here. The water has stayed unfrozen so far. If you think this product will actually warm the water you will be mistaken.The water temp itself is very cold, like refrigerated water. I mistakenly thought I could also use it to keep canned food from getting cold and hard quickly, my mistake. So if you want it only for what it states it will do, keep water from freezing, then it looks like a great product! It's also the right size. It's not as big as others I have seen.

I use this bowl to provide water for a cat who refuses to live inside. It gets kicked around a little, since the local raccoons like to visit as well. They spill water all around it, and they sometimes empty it without my knowing, which means it's plugged in but dry--not recommended by the manufacturer. Still, it continues to work consistently, even in the subzero windchills of December and January. And its surface is pretty easy to clean. My only unfulfilled desire here is the availability of a somewhat larger one, in between small and huge.
