5.0 out of 5 stars Sinking heater Good Deal
I am using the sinking heater to keep the water trough for the horses thawed this winter. It is working very well even through extreme cold. Good price, good performance so far. I would recommend it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Okay heater with some mechanical issues
The heating element on this unit is actually pretty good-- it definitely keeps a mid-sized galvanized tub melted. The problems with the unit come up if you are trying to use it in a plastic-lined pond. There is a guard included with the item, but it is almost impossible to attach and keep attached. My geese had a blast yanking it off whenever they had a chance. Also, the...

Economical pond heater. Heater element tends to crust up and needs cleaning/scraping to maintain efficiency. Soaking in vinegar per instructions helps in the cleaning.

We at one time had to go out in the cold and break the ice for my dog's large 10 gallon tank of water. Not now, it keeps the water warm enough to keep all ice out of it. The dogs looked at it for the first 10 minutes and then never messed with it. They just enjoyed the unfrozen water. I did not want to take any chances because my dogs have been known to chew on things so I just run the wire inside a PVC pipe and no issues. It works great. Order now before it gets cold. Once it gets cold everyone will be buying them and it maybe a wait time before you get one. Thanks and enjoy.

I live in Minnesota and have only been using this heater for about a month. Our weather is just now getting down into the teens at night and so far this heater is keeping my whole pond ice free. I have a 18" deep pond, about 3x5 feet, 260 gallons(I Think). I just put this pond in this summer so it's my first year of winterizing a pond. I just started with cheap goldfish but they are getting a decent size so hope I can keep them alive through the winter. Time will tell!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very pleased with this stock tank heater, February 6, 2011

We actually purchased this heater to protect an A/C cooling tower/cooling water pump/piping system - not a stock tank. But it has served admirably in that service, right through a period of unseasonably cold weather. An inexpensive solution to a potentially very expensive problem. Current demand for this unit is about 13 amps, so we did connect it to a dedicated 20A circuit, and we did install a GFI-protected outlet.

The problems with the unit come up if you are trying to use it in a plastic-lined pond. There is a guard included with the item, but it is almost impossible to attach and keep attached. My geese had a blast yanking it off whenever they had a chance. Also, the plastic "protection" portion which is near the top of the element is pretty much useless if you are going to use this anywhere around animals (like in a water tank). My geese and two 8 month-old Great Pyrenees puppies pretty much ate it off the unit in the first week. I stopped using both of the units I bought after I saw how susceptible to animal chewing they were. I still use one of them in a bird-bath and so far the finches, grosbeaks, and junkos are leaving it alone. I would only recommend this for a fish pond or bird bath-- no larger domestic animals. I watched our neighbor's horses chew through railroad ties and think they would make quick work of this if they found it in their water tank.

Does anyone else have trouble with the cage rusting? Mine also leaves a bluish oily film on the top of the water...

I ordered this item on 1/6/2010, and received an email from Amazon on the 7th saying that the order had been sent to the seller. This was not an Amazon prime member so the free 2 day shipping was not available and I opted for the regular shipping at around $8. Even though the order was received by this seller on the 7th the item didn't get shipped until the 14th, 7 days after they received the order. I may not have paid extra for faster shipping but I expected the order to be filled as soon as they received it. Our estimated delivery was between the 12th and 18th and I think we did receive the evening of the 18th, so they did make that deadline, but I see no reason to take 7 days to even ship an item. I probably won't buy from this seller again. As far as the product itself it was as described and seems to be in working order although we will have to wait for our temperature to drop below freezing to be sure of that.

ITEM IS EXACTLY AS DESCRIBED. EASY TO USE, JUST DROP IT IN YOUR POND AND PLUG IT IN. WHETHER IT WORKS OR NOT IS A DIFFERENT STORY. I GUESS I WIL FIND OUT IN JANUARY/FEBRUARY.
