4.0 out of 5 stars Does the Job
This de-icer works. No problem with that. It was 9 degrees outside this morning, and the bird-bath was liquid water. There are only two minor issues (and these are truly minor). First, I'm using a concrete birdbath, and it's quite shallow (I don't know if others are deeper). If the de-icer is not completely submerged, it will not work well; only the area immediately...

3.0 out of 5 stars Winterizing your birds
Birds get thirsty when the temperatures drop below feezing. This compact device solves the problem with automatic temperature control. It works well, but I gave it only 3 stars because the cord is so short as to require special techniques to reach a power outlet. This review is from: Allied Precision 300 200-Watt Bird Bath De-Icer (Lawn & Patio)
This de-icer works. No problem with that. It was 9 degrees outside this morning, and the bird-bath was liquid water. There are only two minor issues (and these are truly minor). First, I'm using a concrete birdbath, and it's quite shallow (I don't know if others are deeper). If the de-icer is not completely submerged, it will not work well; only the area immediately around the de-icer will be liquid. The unit is quite thick, and I find that the water evaporates rather quickly...or maybe the birds are very thirsty (!), so I'm topping it off almost every day to keep it covered. The second minor problem is that the electric cord is a bit stiff, and it's not possible to keep the heating elements on the bottom of the birdbath without laying a heavy object (like a rock) on the unit to keep it submerged. The problem is the cord needs to go over the lip or rim of the bird-bath, causing the heating element not to lay flat. But, again, this product does the job and I have alot of happy birds right now.

This model has worked all winter and not tripped my circuit breakers. It doesn't fit easily into the bird bath though or I would have given it 5 stars.

UPDATE: While it worked all the FIRST winter, it failed to work at all the following winter. I'm now trying one of the rock shaped heaters.... we'll see on that one.

Works very well. Even though it has a thermostat, we installed it on a timer so that we're not heating the water during the night when the birds aren't around. Ours is a shallow bird bath and since the heater has a rather stiff electrical cord, we weighted it down with a rock to keep it completely submerged.

Birds get thirsty when the temperatures drop below feezing. This compact device solves the problem with automatic temperature control. It works well, but I gave it only 3 stars because the cord is so short as to require special techniques to reach a power outlet. GFCI outlets trip easily when any portion of the connection to an extension cord gets wet -- turning your birdbath into a skating rink. With a little "engineering," you can make this thing reliable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Product was just what I wanted!, January 11, 2008
This review is from: Allied Precision 300 200-Watt Bird Bath De-Icer (Lawn & Patio)
The bird bath de-icer keeps the water clear of ice here in cold NE. The birds love having fresh water by their feeders and we seem to have more of them when there is water for them to drink in the winter.

I was interested in a product that would keep my bird bath from freezing during cold months without spending a great deal of money. This bird bath de-icer has accomplished both. Our temperatures have been in the single digits with wind chills well below zero and to my pleasure this heater has kept the water flowing for my birds. Today as I looked out, several cardinals and chickadees were sharing a drink. I am very pleased, as usual with the quality and the price of this product and others that I have found on Amazon.com

Did a lot of web research on this unit. This one had the most positive reviews. Also the very best warranty. Three years. Very well-made. All deicer's appear to require a fair amount of maintenance. Hard water can be a problem and a build up will void the warranty. Our town does have high concentrations of iron and lime. Vinegar is recommended when 1/32in of deposits are seen! They mention other specific remedies, I'll be using CLR. Happy new year!

Our heated bird spa increased bathing by 56%! Even with outside temps below 20deg. We're taking reservations from the finches right now.

UPDATE:Two seasons still going strong!

Heater stays in place and allows for shallow bowl bird baths. I love the automatic shut off feature. Have not had it ice up once with this product.

This product replaces one that we had used for years. It keeps the water warm enough to prevent freezing so the birds and squirrels have water to drink.
