Product Description

The BDT250 has a durable, coated, compact aluminum base in a low-profile design. Fins provide largesurface area to make the unit run cooler while putting out the same amount of heat as conventional de-icers. Channels within the base promote water flow as the water is heated. Cooler running, coating, and flowing water all combine to reduce mineral buildup. Multiple thermostats allow efficient control while providing over-temperature protection. The BDT250 is safe to use in plastic bird baths and comes with a 10-foot cord.

Folks, I purchased this several months ago on the basis of a number of positive reviews on this site. I don't know where these have gone, but they were uniformly positive. I have been using bb heaters for 16 years, this being the 3rd unit I have had. It is the best by far, having kept the concrete basin, 30+ inches wide and relatively shallow, totally free of ice through the recent extended cold (down into high teens, probably averaging in 20s and snow) lasting several weeks here in Md. It is also on a 30' plus extension cord. I would buy this again.

The heater keeps the water warm enough so that it doesn't freeze, and the water is also not too warm. When there is no water the unit shuts off. Sturdy construction and the low profile works well in my shallow bird bath.

This bird bath heater is simple to hook up and well made. I live in the northeast part of the country, and so far this winter it has done the job of keeping the water above freezing. It also circulates the water gently. I believe it is worth the money. It comes with a 3 year warranty. You must keep it clean!!

We live in southern Minnesota and have gone through four birdbath de-icers in the past 15 yrs, this one being the last. It has a longer cord, which I liked, and it kept our three gallon bird bath free of ice, but only made it through two and a half winters. I will go back to the Allied 300 (API 300) again, although it had a much shorter cord, for we had a previous ones like it for around six years.

This birdbath de-icer is great. Keeps the water flowing for our feathered friends. This unit has a long enough cord for the pedestal bird baths and keeps the ice away in the coldest weather.

Bought this to try and keep a shallow (2" deep) stone bird bath free of ice for a New England winter. It worked well for most of the winter but now trips the GFCI every time it is plugged in. I thought it had thermostatic control to prevent it overheating if the water evaporated and exposed it to the air so I was disappointed that is has failed so soon. We definitely had occasions when the water in the bird bath evaporated and exposed the heater to the air. Perhaps you have to make sure this never happens. I have not been able to establish the reason for it's failure other than it tripping the breaker. The outlet works fine with everything else so the problem is in the unit.

I bought 2 of these, one for myself and the other was to be a gift. I tried mine out and it worked fine for about a week then started popping the GFCI on the outlet. I tried thoroughly cleaning the birdbath as well as the heating unit but I still could not get the outlet to stay on. The exact thing happened with the second heater. I even tried putting the heater into ice water in my sink- the GFCI popped off. I have used an older heater for years and it has worked perfectly, unfortunately it is pretty ugly but I will stick with that one. The 2 API heaters are being returned.
BTW- I have had the outlet checked and there is nothing wrong with it.

I purchased the first from Mills Fleet farm in Oakdale, MN. It worked fine at first but failed after about 3 weeks by constantly tripping the ground fault interrupter. I had outdoor lights on the same outlet and needed to unplug the heater to get them to work. I figured that stuff happens - that this failure was a fluke. I tried to get a replacement at Mills Fleet farm but they were out of stock and the mfg couldn't say when they would get more so I returned it for a refund. I then bought one on line from Amazon. This one also worked fine for about 3 to 4 weeks, then this one failed too. This one didn't trip the GFI, it just quit heating. This product has serious quality issues. I SUGGEST YOU STAY AWAY - DON'T BUY.
