Gr 5-8-Two introductions to World War II and the Cold War that include excerpts from primary sources. Allies begins with a description of America's pre-war isolationist policy; it then presents readers with images on and off the battlefield as the war progresses, ends, and the Truman Doctrine evolves. In Postwar, the kaleidoscope of Communist scares, the conflict in Korea, and the phenomena of television and pop icons are all clearly reported. Although the difficulty of reducing complex times and issues to an elementary level occasionally results in oversimplification, these titles do provide the basics and would be useful adjuncts to other works, such as John Devaney's America Storms the Beaches, 1944 (Walker, 1993) and Carter Smith's The Korean War (Silver Burdett, 1990).-Anita Palladino, Finkelstein Memorial Library, Spring Valley, NY
