Book Description

February 28, 1995
Gordon Steinbrook was a young tenderfoot army second lieutenant, commissioned out of college, and newly married, when he received his orders for Vietnam in 1966. At that time the war was rapidly escalating: the United States hoped for a quick resolution of the conflict through massive amounts of American firepower and troop strength. Steinbrook was no ideologue; like so many of his compatriots, he saw Vietnam service as a job to be done, efficiently and quickly, and then home again as soon and as safely as possible. What elevates Steinbrook’s account into a special category was his assignment as an artillery forward observer with Australian and New Zealand allied troops.

In the American national debate and hand-wringing over the Vietnam War, an often forgotten component of the war is the service of several allied contingents—Koreans, Australians, New Zealanders, Filipinos. The experience of these forces—who often participated in heavy fighting—has not been well reported or studied, not even in the countries that provided the troops. Accounts of the attitudes of these troops toward the war, and toward their ostensible Vietnamese and American allies, are a major contribution of Steinbrook’s book.

The author has created the account of his experience through a skillful blend of memories and letters home; the result is an engaging and unpretentious depiction of what the war was like for an ordinary young man who saw exceptional service in America’s most troubling war.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Steinbrook served in Vietnam in 1966-1967 as a battery fire-direction officer, an artillery forward observer and an artillery aerial observer. Much of the time, his battery operated in support of the 1st Australian Task Force, including a small contingent from New Zealand, in Phuoc Tuy Province. In letters to his parents and bride, reprinted here along with explanatory comments, the brand-new second lieutenant conveys the boredom of base-camp life and the occasional glancing contact with the Viet Cong. He compares American and Australian clothing, gear, rations and command styles, expressing admiration for Aussie officers, who ``seem much better than ours... they're all so darn professional.'' Steinbrook went willingly to Vietnam and returned beliving he had served a worthwhile cause. The most interesting part of the book is his emotion-packed account of his flight home in May 1967. 3.0 out of 5 stars An accurate description of one man's year in Vietnam, February 15, 1999
This review is from: Allies and Mates: An American Soldier with the Australians and New Zealanders in Vietnam, 1966-67 (Hardcover)
Gordon Steinbrook uses old letters written home to recall the day to day events of his year in Vietnam. Steinbrook has one of the truly unique experiences of the war, serving with both US and Australian forces primarily as a forward observer and fire direction officer in artillery. Although his account does not include much 'combat', it does, none the less, give one a true picture of the way it was for many of us. .."long periods of extreme boredom punctuated by short intervals of extreme 'urgency'". I can personally testify to the accuracy of this work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review by named individual in book, July 14, 2000

Andrew T. McGarry (Longwood, Florida USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Allies and Mates: An American Soldier with the Australians and New Zealanders in Vietnam, 1966-67 (Hardcover)
As an American participant in the association with the Australians and New Zealanders, and being a named individual in this book, I can attest to the accuracy and authentic descriptions of the events described by Steinbrook. The professional relationships established by this unique association of nationalities fostered friendships and respect that has endured for over 30 years despite the fact that many have not seen each other in that time. It was a magnificent undertaking by Steinbrook to record his observations during the most vivid and rewarding period of my military career and to mark for history a true example of on-the-scene bonding of individuals, most of whom were not career soldiers, dedicated to accomplishing a very difficult task.
