5.0 out of 5 stars Can't live without my Alligator
I've had the same Alligator for about 4 years, I use it almost every day, sometimes multiple times a day, and it's holding up great. I will tell you - for the easiest operation, you need to cut larger onions into quarters instead of halves. Some people (like my sister) hate it, but I think they are being too gentle when operating it. In order to get the Alligator all...

3.0 out of 5 stars has shortcomings, April 28, 2008

I purchased this based on the positive reviews and high rating it received. I think it was a little inflated. You have to be sure to take off the top rubbery layers of the onion as it won't cut through them very well. Then you have to wiggle it back and forth to get it to cut because it's not a very sturdy product. Also, if you push down too quickly, the onion pieces will spring out onto the counter. I do like the little insert that goes on the non-cutter side, which makes it easier to clean. I would not recommend using this product for anything harder than an onion. I like it better now that I figured out the quirks, but you should know up front that it's got some problems

Some people (like my sister) hate it, but I think they are being too gentle when operating it. In order to get the Alligator all the way through the onions, I have to whack it as hard as I can about 3-4 times (I am not especially large or strong), holding my hand or a cup over the grate so the onion won't fly everywhere. I can fully dice a whole onion in less than a minute!

5.0 out of 5 stars Work Saver, January 9, 2007
This review is from: Alligator AG1 Onion / Vegetable Dicer (Kitchen)
It is a positive work saver in preparing firm vegetables for soups and stews, where a dice is needed or preferred; Whether called for in a recipe' or the personal preferrence of the cook!
It performs a much different function than a mandolin, and therefore is a worthy addition to any cooks tools.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Dicer Couldn't Be Nicer, January 13, 2009
This review is from: Alligator AG1 Onion / Vegetable Dicer (Kitchen)
I've had my alligator for two weeks now and the search is over. I was looking for the easy chopper or dicer and this is it. This thing is quick and slick. Quarter an onion, put a quarter on the base, lower the blade, and after it clicks you have a perfectly diced onion. I've used it for bell peppers too and it works great. I can now dice onions in seconds without a tear. The only con I have found is clean up even though it comes apart the blade section often retains onion skin even after a thorough hand washing. To me this is very minor. This product will reduce prep time with no tears. I would recommend it to all my friends.

2.0 out of 5 stars Flimsy and Messy, September 22, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Alligator AG1 Onion / Vegetable Dicer (Kitchen)
The Alligator is flimsy. It barely cuts half of an onion even with my entire 115-pound weight pressing on it and I felt like it was going to break; and when I am able to cut through half of an onion, the onion bits fly out all over the place so it becomes messy. And then cleaning is hard because onion pieces get stuck in the grids so you need something pointy to press the onions pieces out. Then after two uses, the two pieces fell apart. I will be returning this.

4.0 out of 5 stars It works, but could definitely be improved, May 9, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Alligator AG1 Onion / Vegetable Dicer (Kitchen)
The Alligator AG1 Onion Dicer gets the job done. It quickly dices onions or other vegetables with little hassle (or tears in the case of onions). You will have to cut most onions and vegetables in half if you want them to be chopped correctly. Plus, it can be difficult to push the dicer all the way down through large chunks of onions or vegetables. That's not a problem though and I'm happy with the final product it produces. However, the AG1 can feel a bit cheap and seem like it might break. It's been at work for several months without trouble though. My big complaint is the cleanup. You pretty much have to put it in the dishwasher to get it completely clean. If you just rinse it off you'll later find dried prices in the dicer. And if you use a sponge or dish cloth, you'll usually find lent that has stuck to the blades. So just use the dishwasher.

5.0 out of 5 stars A true timesaver that WORKS!, January 12, 2009
This review is from: Alligator AG1 Onion / Vegetable Dicer (Kitchen)
This is a chopper that actually works. A friend showed me hers and how it works and I had to have one. I do a lot of cooking. The only problem I had (which was actually operator error) was not covering the unit where the food exits while closing the levor on the onion I was chopping. The onion came through the dicer so fast it popped up in the air and we had an onion rain shower. I have used it many times since with no problems. I wash it in the dishwasher and the blade remains sharp too. My daugther grabbed the unit by the cutter and did get a minor slice on her finger when taking it out of the dishwasher once, so be careful. It is a fabulous chopper. I also bought the mini chopper and do garlic on it. I am completely satisfied.

4.0 out of 5 stars nice dicing but requires strength, May 27, 2008

we really like the size and the convenience but it does take considerable effort to push the grid over the onion/apple (all we have tried so far). Worrisome mostly b/c we fear breaking it when pressing down... pressure on both sides of grid (not ON the grid) helps. I can't see HOW you could use it as shown in the picture!! LOL! Cut into slices, works great. You are still cutting with a knife but it takes the tediousness out of the dicing which is EXACTLY what I was looking for. Throwing in the dishwasher to wash is AWESOME (remember to wash plastic grid by hand though!)

2.0 out of 5 stars I'm on my second unit and it is already cracking, April 18, 2011

This chopper works great as long as you are willing to cut the onion into small pieces before putting it on the chopper. If you did what they are doing in the photo for the Alligator (sticking an entire onion on the cutting grid) you would either break the unit, get the onion wedged into the unit (unreal how hard it is to get it back OUT again, and then it's still in one piece), or both.

My first chopper cracked after a couple of days and I was able to return it for another unit. This one has cracked despite more careful handling of it (i.e. not putting an entire onion on the chopping grid).

Just chop your onion with a knife, you're going to need to do that anyhow, if you buy this.
