Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2-A satisfying concept book. Following a poem about the year, which compares the months to gifts that a group of animal friends have wrapped, are short rhymes about each month and a picture of an animal engaged in an appropriate activity (Cat skates in January; Fox delivers valentines in February; Moose eats daffodils in March). The verses are light and humorous. Dewey and Aruego's pen-and-ink and gouache illustrations are some of the best they've done. Brightly colored paintings depict distinctive animals acting out the poems, and are enhanced by a well-conceived layout. This book could certainly be used in story times, but individual readers will savor the details. Although there are plenty of other titles on the months, this one definitely has the edge in verve and vivacity. A delight to look at and to read.

From Booklist

Ages 3-6. In this ebullient celebration of the year, Dragonwagon compares each month to a present waiting to be unwrapped, holding exciting and pleasurable surprises. Her short, sprightly verses feature common animals and joyfully capture highlights of a particular holiday or month. In January, Cat goes ice-skating. In February, Fox delivers valentines. In March, Moose eats daffodils, and so on. The jaunty color drawings, done in pen-and-ink and gouache, add sparkle as they depict each character with energy and enthusiasm. Presents for each character (skates for Cat, a mail pouch for Fox, daffodil catsup for Moose, etc.) and the music and lyrics for a December song wrap up a fine package that has all the elements of an instant hook for young readers and listeners--sequence, rhyme, bright colors, humor, and an upbeat tone.
