Book Description

March 27, 2007
From the trivial to the arcane, Alliss’ 19th Hole is a compulsively readable collection of golf facts, told in the wry voice of the man Golf Digest called the “best golf commentator ever.” Marvel at the accomplishments of golfers who have won a place in “Alliss’ Hall of Fame,” shake your head at the chaos that ensues “When Good Golfers Go Bad,” and relive “The Great Battles of Golf History.” Take an armchair expedition to “The World’s Ten Greatest Holes,” learn “Ten Essential Facts About the Hole in One,” and see what happens when the green is subject to “Animal Intrusions.” Informed by a devotion to the game and a whimsical eye for detail, Alliss’ 19th Hole is the perfect book for any duffer who can’t get enough links lore.

1.0 out of 5 stars Numerous errors in this compilation, December 11, 2008

Mr. Alliss would probably be ashamed to have his name attached to a book with as many errors as this one -- and I'm only up to page 24! In addition to some of the ones listed in another review, Ben Hogan (a) won the Masters before, not after, the US Open in 1951, and he did not finish 2nd in the 1960 US Open (Jack Nicklaus did, as an amateur). What a way to pay tribute to one of the game's greats.

Fortunately, I bought this one for $3 on a clearance rack, but I still consider it wasted money. Not even worthy of a bathroom book, in my opinion.

3.0 out of 5 stars Generally interesting, October 30, 2007
Held my interest. I found the various locations to be enthralling. But I, too, was put off by the several typos I found. That shouldn't appear in any published work.

The book itself was fairly well done. Recommended for hard core enthusiasts.
