I received a free review copy of Allon from the publicist. It's a fantasy book for young adult readers about an imaginary kingdom under the oppressive rule of an evil king. But the remnant of citizens who believe the truth are holding to the promise of a future leader who will bring salvation. It took a great deal of imagination for the author to create this imaginary world, complete with many characters, a language of their own, and battle after battle. If you're thinking this sounds a bit like Lord of the Rings or The Chronicles of Narnia, you're right. In the same fashion, Shawn Lamb constructs a fantasy with unusual creatures and a theme that reminds the reader of a heavenly kingdom. The country of Allon even has 12 provinces, similar to the 12 tribes of Israel. The characters study "verse" which sounds a lot like "scripture."

Yes, it sounds like Lord of the Rings or The Chronicles of Narnia, but that's as far as the similarities go. I found it difficult to get into the book because there are so many characters. Every page introduced more, and I began losing track of who was good, who was bad, and who was who. I was well into the book before I could see Ellis as a clear main character. The story was difficult to follow and too complicated for a young adult audience. Some scenes were too mature for the 9-12 audience as well, dealing with sexual attraction and violence.

As I read, I kept thinking this book would be so much better as a movie where the reader would see the action since it was so difficult to "see" it on the page. When I read the author's bio and realized she has excelled with her screenplays, I can see why I thought this. She has a tremendous imagination and I'm sure her screenplays are terrific.

I have long been a fan of fantasy, both before and after my conversion. As a result, I've done much reading in the genre, and I'm always excited to see more Christian fantasy hitting the shelves of booksellers. When I received an email announcing the release of Allon by Shawn Lamb, the first title in a new series, I nearly tripped over myself to get a review copy.

Unfortunately, when it arrived and I dug in, I was disappointed. The story premise is an interesting one; that of a world in which spiritual warfare is made real through flesh and blood battles between allegorical representations of Jo'Rel (God's) Guardians, and the Shadow Warriors of the rebelled and fallen Dagar, whose puppet kings have usurped the throne from the true ruling family line. However, the writing skills just aren't there to support it.

There are some Old Testament parallels shown mainly in the ritualistic religion of Jo'Rel (temples etc.) and in the twelve regions of Allon, each governed by its own Council member. The surveys of these regions just flies by, as did the introduction to the Lords of those areas, it wasn't fully fleshed out, and most of those characters are regions are entirely forgettable.

Ellis is the main character, and his role is that of a young warrior prince destined to regain the throne. However, he (and most of the other male characters), are snickering through their dialogue at least 30% of the time - even in momentous situations. This really spoiled the character development for me (though there was little to go around in the first place.) Shannan is Ellis' love interest, but his feelings for her are somehow linked to the fate of Allon (which is never fully fleshed out), and there's no real emotion there to be felt by readers.

Shawn Lamb has created a wonderful fantasy story with her book Allon. This is a good verses evil fantasy story where ultimately good triumphs. It’s a enjoyable read I would recommend. Allon would receive a higher rating but the story got bogged down due to too many characters. I had a really hard time keeping everyone straight and it detracted from the overall story.

Content: There is no sex, innuendo or language in this book. There is however a lot of violence and killing. Although usually not extremely graphic is was prevalent throughout.

Rating: 3.5 Stars.

*A KID'S REVIEW*- 12 YEARS OLD

I absolutely love these books! My mom got me the first one and I have been hooked since.

They are full of action and adventure. While there are people dying in battle, it's not gory or anything at all. It's an amazing fantasy, and I would recommend it to anyone.

31/2 stars if I could. I enjoyed the story. It took me to a different place and time, where good and evil dwelled side by side trying to usurp one another. The evil or Dark Ways had grown strong since the Great War and Allon was suffering at its hand.

Fantasy is always full of characters with different abilities and interesting names. I found the cast a bit full and hard to follow. The author said that in future books there will be a list of characters for those of us who need a reminder of who they all are. The map in the book was helpful to know where the characters were traveling.

This is the first in a series and much of the book was devoted to setting the scene and introducing characters. The story revolved about the Guardians and the mortals fulfilling a prophecy. Draga, the creator of the Dark Ways, is finding a way to emerge from his prison to rule the land again. He's a good bad guy, you love to hate. Kell, the good guardian, is full of love for the mortals and wants to take Draga down. Ellis and Shannon are well matched mortals, who encounter many trials in their loyalty and lives. Both of these mortals are surrounded by a host of helpful friends and Guardians. The book leads up to the battle and I don't want to tell you what happens.

I think the author could have gone a bit deeper into the characters and into the challenges that faced Ellis. I felt I didn't really understand how the Guardians worked exactly and I wanted a more clear back story. The concept is great and with a bit more work the book could be fantastic. But overall the book was interesting. I hope for more from the next one.

If you enjoy fantasy and the host of creatures and characters that come with it, then you will enjoy this book. The story gives you hope for the good of our lives. We all fight our own battles, and I think fantasy helps us realize that we are not alone in that
