Trillium combines fantastic vocals with some awe-inspired guitars.
Norrin Radd
The lyrics aren't strong, but the overall musicianship really takes this band to new levels.

I must have listened to it 50 times by now, and it is still my favorite new release by far.

I was turned on to Amanda Somerville by a friend and have been paying attention to her rising career ever since. The music here is slightly different than some of what we're used to on Amanda's solo projects, but it works. The metal aspect of it works very well when accompanied by her voice. The team of musicians that have been assembled here are very talented in their craft and it shows throughout the album. My favorite songs include "Machine Gun", "Coward" (which I believe is the first single), and "Scream It" (which is sort of a metal/rock Romeo & Juliet). I was definitely not disappointed with this album/purchase. Just wish that Amanda (and the rest of the Trillium gang) were able to tour and play in America more often.

I second Michael's review of this disc. I own so many discs I lost count years ago, and I can tell you that this disc has been in my car cd player (which is a single disc player) for two and a half weeks. I must have listened to it 50 times by now, and it is still my favorite new release by far. Amanda's vocals are simply stunning. The songs are great, as is the musicianship. I have only taken this out of the car twice, and it was to bring it into the house and so I could listen to it on some really nice headphones thru a headphone amp. Standout tracks for me are Purge and Mistaken, but I never skip any track on this disc.

If you are familiar with any of Amanda Somerville's work (Kisk / Somerville, Epica, Kamelot, or from her solo album Windows, etc,) then you already know how great her voice is. These songs are fantastic. You need to get this disc now. It will not disappoint!

Format: Audio CD
Released in 2011, Alloy is the debut album from Trillium, a new band put together by vocalist Amanda Somerville (of Kiske/Somerville and Avantasia fame). Somerville is joined by former After Forever guitarist (and Kiske/Somerville collaborator) Sander Gommans and multi-instrumentalist/super-producer Sascha Paeth. Miro lends a hand on keyboards and orchestral arrangements, and the album features a guest appearance by the one and only Jorn Lande on the song “Scream It.”

Unlike what we heard on the Kiske/Somerville album, Trillium has a decidedly more metal sound, not unlike Within Temptation and Evanescence, and to some degree After Forever. It’s more on the radio-friendly, melodic side of things than a full on symphonic metal offering, but ut definitely packs a metal punch. Somerville’s vocals, as expected, are the album’s main focus, and she sounds fantastic, delivering equal measures of power and emotion. The musicianship and production are also first-rate. The only drawback on Alloy is that the songwriting seems uninspired, and perhaps not up to the talents of everyone involved. It’s a totally enjoyable album while it’s spinning, and you can’t help but admire Somerville’s performance in particular, but the songs don’t really stick with you, especially once the album is over.

Alloy is a totally solid melodic metal album, even if it doesn’t quite live up to its potential. Still, Trillium is off to a good start, and if the songwriting improves it’s easy to see the band joining “top tier” acts like Epica, Within Temptation and Delain in the female-fronted metal scene. If you’re a fan of those bands or Amanda Somerville’s previous work, Alloy is definitely worth a listen.

Not to be confused with a now-defunct Canadian band of the same name that once put out an EP 'Alone And Trippin''. Turns out that 'Alloy' here is Trillium's debut CD. Must say that this effort is a most eclectic piece of melodic hard-edged rock. Tunes that had me sit up and take notice were "Purge", the ballad "Utter Descension" ,"Bow To The Ego", "Path Of Least Resistance" and the ass-kicking "Love Is An Illusion". Read somewhere that this CD's second track "Coward" is the first single to promote 'Alloy' and the song has the vocalist Amanda Somerville notably drawing from influences from her former bands she's formerly been in - After Forever and Epica (not familiar with either one). Line-up: Amanda Somerville - keyboards & vocals, Sascha Paeth - guitar & keyboards, Sander Gommans - guitar, Olaf Reitmeier - acoustic guitar and Robert Hunecke - drums. Should hopefully draw in fans of Nemesea, Issa and Nightwish.

I listen to music daily on you tube then I find the group on amazon and if the price is right.....I buy. Females in metal is really great. Voices as strong as Heart's Ann Wilson with heavy bass and outstanding talent. That sells. Radio friendly is my signal to listen. I hate "Death or speed" metal but this is great.

Trillium combines fantastic vocals with some awe-inspired guitars. Fans of symphonic rock or types of goth will no doubt find this album favorable.

I've been a big fan of Amanda since her work with Epica and Avantasia and was really excited when I learned she was making a metal album of her own. There is not a bad song on the CD. From the heavier hits like 'Machine Gun', 'Coward' and 'Scream It' to the softer 'Love is an illusion' this is a truly amazing album and I for one cannot wait for more!

I admit this one took a lot of listening to love it as much as I do now. The music can be somewhat dull, but, as always, Amanda's voice and writing shines through here.
