The basic concept of this tool is good for when working with the engine still in the vehicle. However, the idea is to grab the bearing from the inside and pull it out. This tool has flaws in that the "grabber" baars are not 90 degrees and thus it just slided out of the bearing every time I tired to use it. I ended up taking about an hour to file the "grabber" bars to make them 90 degrees. Once that was done, the tool removed the bearing no problem. The company that makes this tool needs to redesign this tool to make it work properly the first time.

We bought this to use as intended per their instructions. The quality of this device is up there with the best. But, due to the fingers not having a sharp ledge to catch on the bearing's race to enable extraction, the fingers had to be filed down to create the shoulder needed. Otherwise, the fingers would just slide through- even though there was enough sideways force on the fingers, at one time we thought they were going to snap.

We sent an e-mail to the company to let them know about the problem- but what we paid for the device, it was still a bargain.

12/26/12 Update:

We have since used the tool for pulling a ball bearing assembly out of a blind hole, similar as the pilot bearing, but larger. It worked just as well.

I like the simple tool design and tools overall construction is ok. The problem is the tool dose NOT pull the bearing. The tool becomes this spring loaded danger when the bearing does not move as the tools arms are wedged inside the bearing. The tool will then jump wildly once the arms are pulled from the bearing (the only way to remove the tool). The reason I gave it one star, is I was able to get the arms to stay hooked by finding an item to fill the space between the arms while in the bearing (a large screwdriver blade). The bottom line is the tool does not work because the hook arms (believed aluminum) flex in and unhook when the pulling force is applied to pull the bearing.
