Special Features

The second season of Ally McBeal is when the show really hit its stride. Introducing two new cast members, the willowy Nelle Porter (Portia de Rossi) and the (almost literally) fiery Ling Woo (Lucy Liu), this season of Ally compounds the sexual tension around the politically incorrect law offices of Cage & Fish--as if that randy group needed more encouragement. Calista Flockhart's performance as Ally is truly career defining, and she makes her acting look so effortless that it's easy to overlook the fact that she is in nearly every scene. Ally is smart, capable, and a blithering mess when it comes to her social life--a combination many fans can relate to. And the plot twists are demonically hilarious. In one episode, Ally and her bosses (the wryly funny Peter MacNichol, as John Cage, and Greg Germann, as Richard Fish) are asked to defend a 39-year-old woman accused of having an affair with a 16-year-old boy. When Ally meets the now-18-year-old dreamboat, professional demeanor leaves her completely--as it does often. A big bonus of this boxed set is the inclusion, finally, of all the episodes' original music, including original and cover songs by the great soul singer Vonda Shepard--and even Barry White, who appears as one of Ally's frequent, and extremely entertaining, hallucinations. This season, Ally seems determined to conquer her neuroses and has enlisted the help of a therapist (Tracey Ullman) who glibly reassures the self-involved Ally that "Narcissism is a wonderful thing." Ally, surprised: "It is?" Therapist, crisply: "Yes. For me. Nuts like you heat my pool." Ally McBeal also features great performances by Jane Krakowski, Lisa Nicole Carson, Courtney Thorne-Smith, and Gil Bellows--with any or all of the lawyers gossiping, eavesdropping, and most importantly, taking pratfalls in that famous unisex bathroom. Ally is a heroine of the postfeminist era, and one who's willing to laugh at herself--and that makes Ally McBeal a must-watch for fans of TV comedy, drama, romance, and anything else in between. --A.T. 5.0 out of 5 stars The complete season 2!, August 12, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The menus and navigating is a little awkward, but its the best we've got so I can't complain: I'm thrilled to see Ally again just as the episodes aired in good quality and with music in tact.

DON"T WORRY IF YOU DON"T HAVE A REGION 2 PLAYER: IF YOU HAVE A PC OR AN OLDER MAC* YOU CAN DOWNLOAD "VLC MEDIA PLAYER" FOR FREE AND WATCH IT ON YOUR COMPUTER! Try it... just google VLC.
*(will not work on Macs younger than 2003, I believe).

1.0 out of 5 stars Will not play on my brand new Samsung Blue Ray, April 8, 2010

This review is from: Ally McBeal: Season 2 (DVD)
All other standard dvds work fine with the blue ray player. I believe this to be a manufacturing error. When I realized that season 2 does not play, I tried season one with the same result. Great show, but can't watch it. :(

5.0 out of 5 stars It's finally here!, January 28, 2010
This was one of those quirky little shows set in a law firm. It uses its cases to set the mood for each episode but also relies on the peccadillos of its main characters to anchor the show. We have the wattle man, the Barbie doll, the nose noise man; even the unisex bathroom almost becomes a character.

Ally had once dated one of the other lawyers who works at the firm with his current wife which sets the mood for a lot of sexual tension. Ally is supposedly still in love with him though she manages to fall in love with most other hunky men who walk through her door.

As we move through the subsequent seasons we follow the loves and losses of most all of the Firms oddball ensemble cast. I can understand how the feminist movement pointed to this series with disdain. Ally was not an "I can do" female. In fact she was kind of an "I'm falling apart" type of gal. Sort of like me. Maybe that's why I'm so fascinated by this series.

It's too bad the music licensing issue keep this funny show out of the market for so long. There is a large current group of the purchasing public who will probably not buy this series because it's now just too old. I'm giving the same review to each year of the series because they're pretty much alike with interchangeable boyfriends and co-workers - but they're all good.....bg
