I listen to a lot of spanish music. I understand most of it and what I don't, I like the rhythm. This was not what I expected. He had many good reviews on univision. Very very very very very easy listening. Lawrence Welk move over! Maybe it'll get better with time and more listening.

5.0 out of 5 stars Happy Accidents or......how I learned to love Alejandro!, December 23, 2001

Perhaps I should preface this review with a confession. Which, simply put, is that I do not speak a word of Spanish. No, not one...which of course begs the question, ' why am I reviewing a disc sung entirely in a language that I cannot understand? ' I'm glad you asked!

In all actuallity my finding out about this incredible artist ( be warned: many more superlatives to come! ) was nothing more than a 'happy accident.' While at a listening station, attempting to ( obviously ) listen to a certain artist at a local record store, I punched the incorrect corresponding number and Alejandro came pouring out of the speakers. Well, realizing my mistake do you think I promptly pushed the right digit. Absolutely not! " Cuando Nadia Me Ve " came straight at me and with my curiosity piqued I listened to the second selection as well, that being " Hay Un Universo ". From that point on I was past the point of no return! By the time I got to track no. 7 " Me Ire' " I was in absolute awe of this young man who sang with such an incredible passion and sheer abandonment that I purchased my own copy and have been joyfully listening ever since. I 'm not quite sure how to review a disc by an artist who simply gives so much of himself in his music that I feel almost honoured that he is sharing his talents with us. I will state without hesitation that tracks 2-5 are without a doubt the most revelatory music that I have had the pleasure of enjoying for so many years. " Para Que Me Quieras " is in itself worth the price of this album but let's not mince words....everything here is done with pinpoint precision and with an integrity that I really miss in most of today's English speaking artists. Nothing here sounds even remotely calculated or disingenious. And it isn't just Alejandro's voice that conveys these emotions but also the musicianship which is not only creative but imaginative ( there's a word I don't get to use very often ) plus performed by truly first-rate musicians as well! And kudo's to producer Emanuele Ruffinengo who did a splendid job in tying all these loose ends together. By the time Alejandro get's to the last track, that being " Silencio " I am generally emotionally spent but....all the happier for the experience that he gives the listener. Bravo indeed!

Obviously I'm quite sold on Alejandro Sanz and I simply defy anyone who purchases " Al Alma Al Aire " not to enjoy it almost as much as I do.... regardless of your affinity for Spanish! And if you do purchase your very own copy, for whatever reasons, feel free to e-mail me and let me know what you think. I've kept Alejandro a secret up to this point but now that my secret is out I'm curious as to how other listener's may respond to this amazing young man. Accidents not withstanding.... I can't even recall, who was I trying to really listen to that day?

5.0 out of 5 stars El Alma de un Poeta, October 4, 2000
By

This review is from: Alma Al Aire (Audio CD)

5.0 out of 5 stars This guy has real talent, March 10, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Alma Al Aire (Audio CD)
Gotta be honest - I've never heard of this guy until I saw his performance on the Grammy's. I don't speak a word of Spanish, but I was completely blown away. Since I loved the song he performed on the broadcast ("Quisiera Ser," with Destiny's Child), I figured start with the CD that one is on. I can't understand why he's not more popular in America. He's got real talent and an ability to communicate his feelings that transcends any language barriers. Yes, he obviously uses Flamenco rhythms, but there's also a lot of American-influenced jazz and popular standard. Given the fodder we're fed in music these days, it's refreshing to hear someone as musically alive as Alejandro Sanz. If his marketing promoters are smart, they'll release a single of the "Quisiera" version with the translation by Destiny's Child. It worked, and it would open him to a broader American market. He's one of those artists that when you hear one CD, you want to get another. He's that good.

5.0 out of 5 stars A true artista (Alejandro Sanz reclaims his crown), October 5, 2000

I finally got my hands on the new CD and wasn't disappointed, this is probably my most anticipated CD for this year. DO NOT listen to the naysayers. This is a brilliant album and Alejandro has progressed to another level. His flamenco spirit takes the fore in his singing as its much more mature and raspy. His flamenco roots also take root in a few more of the melodies than his previous albums. A stand out is "El Alma Al Aire" (I am surprised it wasn't the first single) with its mixture of pop, flamenco, salsa, frankly it is in the same vein as Corazon Partio only a more brilliantly crafted song. The other stand out is "para que me quieras" which is a beautiful ballad. If you loved "Mas", 100% you will love this album as it is an extension and progression of it. Alejandro Sanz reclaims his crown as king of Spanish pop.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE BEST WORK OF ALEJANDRO, September 26, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Alma Al Aire (Audio CD)
I have been a fan o Alejandro Sanz since he began his career, and in that time I and many others fans have see him fully succes in his career. Since his album "MAS" and the hit son corazon partio, this album el alma al aire has no comparison. I consider it the best of the best. Regarding his starters with viviendo de prisa were you are avail to here him with his teeanager voice he has mature during this years, so you can be able to hear a Alejandro Sanz much mature, Please if you have the oportunity to listen to it do it, you wont regret it. Remember Alejandro Sanz has been voted one of the european music sellers of the year twice.

5.0 out of 5 stars This guy is great!, March 15, 2002

Like the majority of the anglophones who reviewed this album, I heard about Alejandro Sanz via his Grammy performance with Destiny's Child. His performance blew me away and I was curious to know why I hadn't heard of him before. He is one of the most passionate singers I have ever heard and I understood everything he sang eventhough I speak very little spanish. I suppose he hasn't been as high profile as the Marc Anthony's and Ricky Martin's because he has never released an english speaking album, but seeing that he is more talented than most latin-pop artists out right now, he doesn't have to. I have listened to "El Alma Al Aire" and "Mas" and I love them both. His music makes you wish you were latin and living in Spain. Alejandro Sanz should be at the top of anyone's favorite singer list.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lovely Spanish pop, May 13, 2001
This review is from: Alma Al Aire (Audio CD)
Alejandro Sanz is one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary Latin music. He is as much a poet and performance artist as he is a singer, and his dramatic style of singing is evident on this CD, "El Alma al Aire." The CD starts off with a more serious-sounding performance on "Cuando nadie me va," and then takes a more exuberant turn on the next song, "Hay un universo...." Most of the songs have a mellow quality, with an occasionally ethereal sound. The title song makes effective use of a female (or is it falsetto?) chorus and horn section. Overall, this is not Sanz's best CD; I think he has done stronger work on "Mas" and on "Alejandro Sanz 3." But "El Alma el Aire" is still a strong CD of Spanish-language pop music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Otra vez... Alejandro, February 12, 2001
By
This review is from: Alma Al Aire (Audio CD)

5.0 out of 5 stars El Alma AL Aire, January 11, 2003
By
This review is from: Alma Al Aire (Audio CD)
This is the second cd I own from Alejandro Sanz. The first time I heard of him was when he performed in an Award show in Spain, and since I'v loved his music. This cd I very emotional and sensual (as the Spanish language itself) and not corny. If you want something new to listen to then this is the one and trust me you will cherish it forever. Even though you might not understand Spanish you will enjoy this cd very much because you will feel what he fell just listening to his raspy voice. He is truly a great artist the has come from the Spanish speaking world. My favorite tracks are "Cuando nadie me ve", "Para que me quieras", "Me ire",and El alma al aire".

5.0 out of 5 stars Soothing CD ever, May 19, 2002
By
This review is from: Alma Al Aire (Audio CD)
I bought this CD 2 years ago, and it's become a few of my favorite All-the-Time CD. All the songs match Alejandro's sensual voice and that made such a smooth, soothing music. This album have reaffirmed his own unique music style: NOT a kind of music that horns always blasts with Latin beat NOR a collection of ballads that is occupied by too-much kind of voice. Comparing from other singers, he is in a totally different entity.

I did not understand spanish at all when I bought this, but it was still very enjoyable. I felt like I was saved by his music.

When you're in a great stress, and wants comfort from something, this Cd will give you one!
