A concise and valuable source,

This review is from: Alma-Tadema: The painter of the Victorian vision of the ancient world (Hardcover)
The Swanson book includes both biography and artistic scholarship. It is a much easier read than most art crititques, and quite lively and perceptive. It is a bit light on biographical insight and heavy on historical detail. The selection of plates is excellent, but the book's small format causes such compression of the very large paintings as to obscure a lot of detail. Its best feature is the consistent context given to Alma-Tadema's work as an expression of Victorian ideals and sensibilities, and hypocrisy and prejudices, through depictions of ancient worlds which only exist within that peculiar vision.
