Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Zimpala are two French DJ's (DJ BNX and David Walters). 'Almaviva' is a delightful juxtaposition of musical styles, combining driving 4/4 floor fillers, swirling Latino flavors, low end theory d 'n' b dynamics and blissfull chill out forever vignettes.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best Nu Jazz Albums so far, February 6, 2001
By Guga (Georgia) - See all my reviews
Ok, you can buy some cool Nu Jazz compilation, but it will be made up on basis of different artists work. Zimpala was able to record the album which is all-round champion in Nu Jazz and believe me if you purchase it you wont regret. First and last tracks are my favorites and In my opinion next year I won't have possibility to purchase something like that in Nu Jazz Chill Out Electronic.

4.0 out of 5 stars I liked this - after getting over it NOT being like the 1st Song., April 7, 2006

Zimpala is a group out of France. The concept is actually pretty interesting - they have a nice mix of house tunes but mix in live musicians and singers with a variety of the songs. They only have two albums out that I'm aware of, "Almaviva" and "The Breeze is Black". Both of them have had one or two songs that really snapped nad picked up on mainstream vibes. I first heard Zimpala on a compilation titled "Serve Chilled" and from that song, had to hear more of their style.

Unfortunately for me, the first song that I heard of theirs on that compilation was titled "To the Bass". It's the song that opens up this cd. It's a terrific lounge track, sort of bossa track that will literally take you to the beach. It's a sensational sunshine song that sways gently and easily. I said "unfortunately for me" because that song has absolutely nothing to do with the rest of this album. There simply isn't another song like it on the album. The track follows up into "Baseball", a cut with a particularly epic intro and beat to it. It was actually pretty good. The energy is consistent through quick beat tracks like Mahagon and even Torida Ballet. Other cuts that stood out to me were "Come Back", which was a much needed change of pace from the beats in the previous six tracks, even adding in some vocals. "Hold Up" also had a good bit of energy to it and "New Home" was a pretty appropriate trippy finale.

I liked this album after getting over the disappointment of it not being similar in style to "To the Bass"... that is to say I expected something similar to another bossa album of the time (2000) like maybe Nicola Conte's "Jet Sounds". Having said that, obviously this album might not be for anyone - especially since it's listed here at 37 bucks! (I found it on clearance at a local shop one day mismarked for $2). But it's still a capable electronic album with some pretty neat songs on it. I'd say if you like Atjazz and maybe even Hybrid's work from the late 90's/2000, you'll want to check this out. And also remember they have a second album out from 2003 too.
