Book Description

Erica, an European American girl, visits the home of Nancy, her Chinese American friend. In her glimpse of Nancy's cultural heritage, Erica finds much to admire and enjoy. In introducing her friend to her family's culture, Nancy discovers that she needn't feel embarrassed or ashamed about it. Together, the two girls learn that the more they share, the more each of them has. A wonderful story to help instill pride in children in their ethnic heritage rather than feelings of shame or embarrassment. An excellent story about cross-cultural friendship. 36 pages, full color, hardbound with paper jacket.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Artist You Shan Tang has a definite flair for the captivating image. Author Cynthia Chin-Lee tells her story with a quiet, very cheerful pride. Well crafted. Very stylish for today's America." -- The Book Reader, Fall, 1993

"At a time when racial intolerance remains all too common, Chin-Lee's story of a friendship that reaches across racial lines and embodies appreciation for cultural diversity, is one that children should hear while they are young enough to benefit from it." -- Asian Week, August 20, 1993

From the Publisher

Cynthia Chin-Lee's story of friendship and acceptance delicately presents an important message for children. Where many children feel it necessary to deny their cultural heritage in the hope of conforming with dominant culture America, this story offers a girl who is able to take pride in her heritage while still maintaining a close friendship with an American of European ancestry. It also illustrates acceptance of and interest in a non-European culture by the European American girl so that readers can see an alternative way of responding to new or different cultures.

4.0 out of 5 stars Introduces readers to other multicultural families, May 18, 2001
This review is from: Almond Cookies & Dragon Well Tea (Hardcover)
Erica Howard and Nancy Hong are best friends at school. They play and eat together. Nancy invites Erica over to her home for a playdate. Nancy Hing lives in a old townhouse over a laundry/dry cleaning shop (the author's grandparents had a laundry in the DC area many decades ago). Erica is introduced to Nancy's mother, grandmother (PoPo) and grandfather (Gung Gung). "Ni hao?", grandfather greets them. PoPo serves them almond cookies and sweet dragon well tea. Nancy shows Erica the family altar and then plays a tune on her Gu Zheng (Chinese zither). Then Gung Gung takes them to the park where they can play under his dozing gaze. The playdate ends with a walk home, but there is a reminder of the afternoon in a brown paper bag.
