Biography

When Annie Lennox paused her Diamond Jubilee Concert performance to let a white-suited, angel-winged blonde fire a soaring Les Paul solo into the sky above Buckingham Palace, uninitiated viewers all asked the same question. Who’s that girl? Needless to say, the music fans and blues-heads in the crowd already knew the answer. It was Joanne Shaw Taylor. The whisky-voiced singer. The ... 5.0 out of 5 stars Smoldering Blues Rock .... September 11, 2012
By JBB1
Format:Audio CD
Twenty-six year old British blues rocker Joanne Shaw Taylor scores big on this album which has a wide variety of blues rock songs with jazz and slow blues overtones.

The music on the album is dominated by an interesting mix of David Garza's keyboards, JST's sometimes jagged guitar riffs, and her trademark husky and hoarse, sometimes breathless, voice. JST does not have the dynamic vocal range of a Melissa Etheridge, Susan Tedeschi or Carolyn Wonderland. JST sings within a fairly narrow range with the exception of the song Jealousy on this album, where she sucessfully explores the upper range of her vocal range.

Jealousy - five stars. Beautifully done slow blues number that perfectly integrates David Garza's organ work with JST's guitar work.

Lose Myself to Loving You - Another five star song. A slow blues ballad accompanied by a beautiful piano solo by Garza.

Army of One - five stars. Great duet of acoustic slide guitar from Billy White with great picking from JST.

You Should Stay, I Should Go - four stars. Another great song with a well integrated combination of a solid rhythm section, organ, and JST's electric guitar.

Overall, I could not find a bad song on this album, they are all keepers. No filler on this album, IMO.

Well done album with energetic and interesting music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Joanne Shaw Taylor... The Future of British Blues! November 6, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Joanne Shaw Taylor continues to carve a niche for herself in the blues world with the release of 'Almost Always Never' that leaves the tried and trusted format of her first two critically acclaimed albums 'White Sugar' and 'Diamonds In The Dirt' made with legendary producer Jim Gaines at Bessie Blue Studios in Tennessee. Joanne Shaw Taylor instead opts to "leave her comfort zone to explore and embrace new territories, while remaining true to herself " and record her groundbreaking third album 'Almost Always Never' in Austin, Texas with the innovative Mike McCarthy who produced, recorded and mixed the sessions with David Garza on keyboards & mandolin, Billy White on bass & acoustic slide and J.J. Johnson on drums.

'Almost Always Never' confirms all the hype and expectation surrounding Joanne Shaw Taylor and is blinding proof (should you need it) that she is indeed the real deal! Now in explosive form on her new Gibson guitar and trademark seductive smoky vocals, she continues to wear her heart on her sleeve writing 11 more compelling originals along with giving a rousing rendition of the great Frankie Miller classic 'Jealousy'. Anyone expecting the same old blues may be disappointed as this is an artist on a mission going places, bearing her very soul through electrifying blues that you would love to get lost in!

You may well ask... what makes Joanne Shaw Taylor so special and sets her apart from many of her contemporaries? The truth is that when unleashed on guitar like (dare I say) Hendrix or early Clapton, her music takes you on a voyage of discovery into the unknown (that only adds to its appeal) and suggests somewhere down the line she is more than capable of recording her own version of 'Electric Ladyland'... now wouldn't that be something! With the passing of so many great blues legends, we thankfully have gifted young artists like Joe Bonamassa picking up the gauntlet and continuing to shine a light for American blues, just as Joanne Shaw Taylor has now lit a beacon and is very much part of the future of British blues!

I love the way Joanne flat out smokes on the guitar. Her sultry voice goes perfect with the songs she writes. I have all of Joanne's albums, but this is the first time she let's it rip on guitar Thouroughly enjoyable.

I really love her guitar work. Her vocals are good, not great. It nice to hear her play some different styles, including one song that sounds like reggae.

3.0 out of 5 stars not as good as her first
I have all three of her CDs. In my mind the first is the only one I get excited about. I am a blues purist and really don't care for metal guitar. Read more
