Product Description

Almost Brothers (Quase Dois Irmãos) - Amazon.com Exclusive

This poignant film is the story of two men: white, middle-class Miguel, and black favela-dweller Jorge who meet as boys through their fathers' passion for music. Their friendship is renewed during a lengthy incarceration in the mid 1970's.

Director Lúcia Murat offers a commentary on the lowest rung of society in contemporary Rio de Janeiro when, as adults, Miguel and Jorge, one a government official and the other a drug lord, respectively, discover that their lives have more in common than they ever realized.

2004's "Almost Brothers" is a big, bold, and ambitious epic. Crossing three time frames and dozens of different characters, the movie charts the bond between two men who became good friends while in prison together. One was a political prisoner, the other a common thief--and while they initially joined forces over idealistic and right-minded principles, the evolution of the country's social and criminal framework sent them on very different paths. Well acted and intricately constructed, this is an impressive film. However, with so much content the film doesn't spend enough time on certain characters to make this as emotionally devastating as it might have been. I'd have loved to see this in a longer format--even potentially a mini-series. KGHarris, 8/11.

Interesting storyline about a group of political prisoners and the problems that arise through the movie. Most movies don't grab my attention, this one I watched it in one segment.
