4.0 out of 5 stars Really Cool Book for kids getting into learning "EVERYTHING", December 13, 2006

I bought this book because my son LOVES costumes and this includes four pages of historical costumes. I was quite surprised at what a cool book this is. I found it originally on a baby/kid boutique website, but knew Amazon would have it at a better price! I was right! It is 30+ pages of beautifully illustrated pictures of well, "almost everything" The one thing I was surprised they didn't mention in reviews is that the two pages of human body parts includes a full color illustration of a man and woman including not "almost everything" but everything. But, it is human anatomy, so I don't have a problem with it. I will definately be getting the zoo-ology book by Jolivet and will probably give it as a gift to somebody in the future. It's really cool! IT'S A HUGE BOOK TOO! Almost 20 inches tall and 1 foot wide.

I am in love with this book. My son is in love with this book. It's oversized, a bit eclectic and jam-packed with images and accompanying words, featuring both ordinary and unusual objects with great attention to detail.

Each page is a theme - trees and plants, the human body, costumes, transportation. It's part history, part anatomy, part cultural reference, part botany and totally entrancing. There are so many objects on each page, it's easy to miss some objects in a single read. That's part of the fun, because it's fun to find new things in subsequent readings. Slightly older children can use it to associate uncommon words with accompanying images, which makes it a keeper on our bookshelf for years. Lovely book. Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great illustrations, September 7, 2007
This review is from: Almost Everything (Hardcover)
The illustrations and subjects covered are wonderful. There are illustrations of a naked man and woman that are non-sexual, but they caused quite a stir with my 6 year old. I would only recommend for mature children.

5.0 out of 5 stars high quality printed art for all ages, March 8, 2006
This review is from: Almost Everything (Hardcover)
This is an astonishingly high quality printed art book in brilliant colors, at an inexplicably low price. A mix of retro, arts & crafts, stylized pictures in great colors. We bought one to cut out the pictures and make collages out of them. Does anyone know about this artist's background?

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for children, December 18, 2009
This review is from: Almost Everything (Hardcover)
My 2 1/2 year old twins LOVE this book. The illustrations have prompted conversations and learning that they never would have had otherwise. I actually especially like the human anatomy pages. The non-sexual nature of the pictures makes it easy to talk to your children about the human body in a matter-of-fact way. They both know the difference between a boy and a girl, know that their baby brother was in my stomach, and understand the basics of the digestive and circulatory systems!

Also, the other illustration-packed pages have taught them SO much. They know the names of instruments, animals, tools, and vehicles. The cool thing is that it lets you explain whatever catches their fancy. Anyway, I love this book. It's one of the best impulse purchases I've ever made.

1st off, most parents will want to know that, yes, there is nudity (on The Human Body pages) & partial nudity (on the Costumes of the World pages) So if you have a problem with those, don't buy this book. However, if you love gorgeous woodcuts, beautiful colors, good art, and pictures crammed with details and variety, this is a book for you. Anyone who liked Richard Scarry as a young child will love this, as well - loads of pictures & all labeled! & in the back of the book is even more information on everything pictured. I bought this to go with our copies of Zoo-ology & 365 Penguins.
