Richardson's ability to firmly establish a sense of place draws the reader deep into the psyche and actions of Officer Chuck Johnson. No cute "hidden" clues here. It's all "in your face", and as the reality grips you, you feel not only the horror of Johnson's growing realization but also his sickening dissembling as the fragile web he has woven to protect his sanity dissolves. Most unsettling is the small town backdrop for this word painting that makes the reader accept that the story and its twisted ending could, in fact, be true. Outstanding!
