Magical roller coaster ride, November 11, 2001
Prrrr...eeeheee!! Yeah! Welcome to our party! The Kelly Family gets you wiggling on your chair for a maximum of 3 seconds before you get up and dance to "When The Boys Come Into Town", a Spanish style folk song mixed with English. Then, when you're all sweaty and out of breath, you can sit down and relax while Maite Kelly enfolds you in dreamy "Every Baby". Angelo is up next, with his song "I Can't Help Myself" that shot to the top of the charts all around Europe.
"Nanana", sung by Jimmy Kelly, goes way beyond what the title would suggest. It is a very deep, emotional song that will play in your head for quite a while. It might just make you sit down and think about your own inner and outer world a little more.
"You Belong To Me" has Patricia bringing her sensitivity into a beautiful ballad and her angelic voice gives it a heavenly touch.
Woah! Switching gears here! Iron Man Joey Kelly powers out of your speakers with "Staying Alive", a rocky uptempo confrontation with the world from Joey's point of view.
The heavenly note is brought back in by Kathy Kelly with "Come Back To Me", followed by Paddy's smash hit "Fell In Love With An Alien". Sometimes I wonder whether Paddy really had this imaginary view of a relationship which he turned into a song, or if he is expressing a rendez-vous he had with the woman of his dreams in dreamtime. Whichever way, the love and care put into this song are very present, almost like the tender touch of a mother to a sleeping infant.
All right, get off your chairs! "Hey diddle diddle" is an uptempo, humorous party-tune. Meet this mix of old children's songs like Humpty Dumpty put to a new melody, which makes it into a perfect tear-drawing laughter blend. Let's dance!
"Like a Queen" brings Barby with a more serious note. It's a simple song, but it goes deep under your skin. "Stars Fall From Heaven" has Maite and Patricia Kelly sprinkling fairy dust and star dust through your mind and in your ears. Sister and sister hand in hand take you into a fairylike longing love song.
And right after that Jimmy blows the fairy dust out of your ears again when he bursts into the room with his rebellious "Thunder".
A very tender spot is touched when Paddy starts his "Calling Heaven", which is sung from the perspective of a dying person. I was deeply impressed by this song and had tears rolling for a long time. Kathy's "Nothing Like Home" gently caries you out of the album, and when you've opened up emotionally through all the songs on the album, you can feel the depths of knowing that the words of this song are true.
I had the shivers after I'd heard this album for the first time. It is an emotional roller coaster ride going from pain and sadness through anger to intense joy and fun and deep love. And yet every song has that angelic touch. It truly is "Almost Heaven".

Almost Heaven by the Kelly Family, August 20, 2000
This review is from: Almost Heaven (Audio CD)
This is the best CD I have ever heard. Kelly Family are an amazing band. In the country in which I live nobody knows them, but I actually found out about them through my cousin in Germany. Anyway, it's a great CD. Go out and buy it. My favourite song would probably be "Fell in Love with an Alien". Paddy's voice sounds amazing (as usual). Kelly Family deserve all the success they get and more. Long live Kelly Family!
