4.0 out of 5 stars Review of Almost Home
I really liked this book. I read it in one sitting, because I didn't want to put it down. I recommend this book to any girl around the age of 11 or 12. It is a really good plot with realistic characters. I really liked it.

2.0 out of 5 stars What a horrible novel!
[...]. Our class had to read this book, and we all hated it. We all agreed that this was one of the worst books we've ever read. This novel has no real plot, no action--nothing really at all except teenage angst. Not that good teenage angst, either, but boring angst! It was really hard to get through since I didn't want to read any further. This book would probably be...

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost Home, March 25, 2007
This review is from: Almost Home (Paperback)
I read this book as an adult, but gave it to my 13-year old granddaughter when I was finished because I thought it would be a good book for her. Although it was simply written, it had a strong message that I thought would be better heard coming from one young person to another. An easy, yet enjoyable read.

The book Almost Home was amazing.Even though Leah wanted to kill herself she worked through her problems and got through it. This story is truly inspiring. It shows that even the toughest situations can be turned into good. If you want an encouraging story, I recommend this book to you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book!, February 2, 2006
By
This review is from: Almost Home (Paperback)
Leah's whole world has been turned upside down. She is suddenly living with her father and new stepmother while her sister and mother move across the country. She's the new kid in sixth grade and feels totally lost and alone. In her struggle, she lashes out at her stepmother, avoids others at school and retreats to a world of her own imagination. It is only when Will, another lonely student, reaches out to her that Leah is able to dream and stake a claim on her future.

Almost Home takes a hard look at what it means to be a family and what happens when that family is broken apart. As told through Leah's eyes, Nora Raleigh Baskin vividly captures the loneliness of divorce, yet provides some hope for the future.

Leah begins to find her own voice through the support of Will and a few kind words from a teacher. Leah's character is fully developed and written with honesty showing both her positive and sometimes nasty sides. By creating a believable character in Leah, young readers are able to relate and grow along with her. While some of the characters surrounding Leah are not as convincingly drawn, the focus remains on her thoughts and personal growth, and therefore does not hinder the feeling behind the story.

Armchair Interviews says: Almost Home is an honest portrayal of the difficulties of surviving a divorce and the tremendous growth that comes from discovering your own place in the world.

This book is great for tweens ages 9-14. I could easily relate to the main character Leah, and all her actions and emotions. Baskin really puts down in words what is going on in a 12 year old's head. I couldn't put the book dwon for a second IT WAS GREAT~I would read this book over and over again. If you love this book (like i do) i highly request reading her 1st book WHAT EVERY GIRL EXCEPT ME KNOWS, also.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Almost Home (Hardcover)
Almost Home is written by Nora Raleigh Baskin. This book is extraordinary and is highly recommended for summer reading for both girls and boys. This is Ms. Baskin's seconed novel. She has also created What Every Girl (Except Me) Knows. She grew up in New Paltz, NY, as well as in Brooklyn.
The main character in this book is Leah Baer; she is twelve yeas old and lives in New Paltz, New York. One of the very important minor characters is Will Hiller, the only one who seems to like her. Leah's parents are divorced, and she is living with her father, and her stepmother. The genre of this book is realistic fiction. There are real places mentioned in the book that are here in New Paltz such as Huguenot Street and the Mohonk Mountains. The book was great and highly recommended.

This novel has no real plot, no action--nothing really at all except teenage angst. Not that good teenage angst, either, but boring angst! It was really hard to get through since I didn't want to read any further. This book would probably be something interesting for a 10 year old, but I'm not so sure that many people older than that would find this interesting.
