100% Primitive Baptist, October 8, 2001
This review is from: Almost Home (Audio CD)
Listeners not accustomed to the music of the Primitive Baptist Church sometimes come away with the impression that the music is very dark. This is rather unfortunate. The music does reflect the hardships of life. Most of this music comes from Appalachia, where life, unfortunately, is often unkind, sometimes ugly, and frequently very short. However, what also comes shining through in every case is a rock-solid faith that God unswervingly keeps and protects his children through all the darkness of this life and leads them, without exception, into the joys of Christ's kingdom.
This album is a compilation of both newly-recorded (as of 1992) material, as well as old material: Thy Will Be Done, Old Village Church Yard, Life's Other Side, and Jerusalem My Happy Home.
Two standouts on the album are God Put A Rainbow in the Clouds and the title track, Almost Home. The themes explored on these two tracks are worked and reworked throughout the album. The first song uses the biblical story of Noah as a symbol of the eternal and trustworthy nature of God's promises and the sureness of His deliverance.
The second song, Almost Home, is quintessentially Primitive Baptist. It simultaneously expresses the weariness of the pilgrim as well as his joy at being so close to his final goal. The opening lines to the song say it all: "For many long years, I've travelled this road / I'm weary and tired of carrying this load / So often I'm tempted, with Satan to bear / But I'm too near home to turn back now / Almost home, I'm almost home / I know my race is nearly run / through trouble and sorrow I've already come / I can't turn turn back now for I'm too near home".
Besides the wonderful choice of the material, the execution on each track is truly authentic. There is little polish applied here; what is heard on the album is exactly what one would expect to hear from a Primitive Baptist quartet. At times, one may even hear members of the Clinch Mountain Boys "hunting" for the right notes, with even the rare "wrong" note being found.
This can be heard most distinctively at the opening of Old Village Church Yard. However, instead of detracting from the recording this rather acts as an appropriate introduction to a piece that you will not soon forget. The harmonies that follow are slightly dissonant and have a wailing, plaintive tone, which, if one listens to the lyrics, is perfect given the subject matter!
What comes through on recording is the passion and faith of a believer. Having been raised in the Primitive Baptist church, Dr. Ralph has not only mastered the style of singing, but truly understands the messages of the songs.
The only disappointment is that a fine accapella piece, Bright Morning Star, that appears in the band's anthology of 1971 - 1973 recordings released by Rebel Records in 1995 is not included on this album.
Highly recommended; one of Ralph Stanley's finest releases! If you like the music on this album, you may greatly enjoy the recordings of Higher Than I and Vision of a Golden Crown that are featured on Don Rigsby's A VISION.

Very Good, but not Great, March 27, 2002
This review is from: Almost Home (Audio CD)
Almost Home is a very good CD, but falls short of being a great one. As always, the voice of Ralph Stanley can elevate any recording to heights it would not otherwise achieve.
In addition, to Stanley, you will also get to hear the voices of Keith Whitley and Ricky Skaggs on some of the songs.
No less than seven of the songs are excellent with "They Shall Walk With Me in White" and "Almost Home" topping the list for me.
A number (too many in my opinion) of the songs are done in a sort of call and response style (meaning Stanley sings a line and then it is repeated by the group), with the results being a little to repititious.
Despite a few shortcomings, I rate the CD highly and would buy another if my CD were lost or broken.
