Bitter Sugar, April 15, 2008
This review is from: Almost Love (Standard Edition) DVD (DVD)
Ji-hwan is a happy fellow. Seemingly a bit dimwitted, his goal in life is to become a Korean Jackie Chan. Reckless and a bit too strong for his own good, Ji-hwan is a walking catastrophe waiting to happen. Luckily he is able to use his energy as a performer in a television series similar to the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and as a stuntman while earning his degree in Tae Kwon Do. His best friend since childhood is the svelte, pretty Jin Dal-rae, a girl who dreams of becoming an actress, but whose stage fright keeps her from being able to perform in front of an audience without the aid of anxiety pills. Along with this duo is Moon Young-hoon, an attractive, athletic man who attends the same university as Ji-hwan and Dal-rae. Although he is in loves Dal-rae and although he is dating her, the girl always keeps him at an arm's length. Dal-rae's close relationship with Ji-hwan also does not help matters.
Almost Love is a long film that shifts from the present to the past showing Ji-hwan met Dal-rae while giving hints that the duo's friendship is stunted and that it should blossom into a romantic affair. However, because of egotism and stubbornness, the love is unable to bloom. Yet, will a tragic event change this, or will it tear Dal-rae and Ji-hwan further apart?
Made in a country in which romantic comedies more often than not become tragedies, Almost Love definitely does not bring anything new to the table, but with likable characters and nice cinematography, it is worth the time for those who enjoy Korean romantic comedies.
