Almost Out of Everything!!,
By Gayle Jackson Sloan "Author" (Philadelphia, PA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Almost Out Of Love (Paperback)
Almost out of love, time, patience, life!! This book has a little of everything. The main character Renee is a very successful psychologist with a florishing practice, a beatiful home and...a husband who ignores her. Caught up in his own need to be as successful or better, he can't see that his wife, who can help everyone else, can't help herself or their marriage. When she meets handsome Deek, a self-assured, sensitive, YOUNGER, police officer after a break-in at her home, life suddenly looks a little more interesting. Then there is Renee's patient, Veda Simms, who has practically destroyed her own life in the pursuit of a man who could care less about her. How she finally comes to that realization and what she does about it will have you on the edge of your seat. I do not usually read murder mystery books. However, I found this one hard to put down. I mean staying up to two in the morning trying to finish hard to put down. Ms. Phaire has done a wonderful job of weaving a story that draws you in and keeps you guessing right up to when the real murderer is revealed. Also, by the books end, your opinion of Bill, Renee's husband may give you pause and you realize that he may not be exactly what you thought he was. I enjoyed this book very much and can't wait to see what Ms. Phaire comes up with next. I thought the characters were very well described and easy to imagine. However, there was one very clever twist that I won't reveal, other than to say it was a real jaw-dropper!! Way to go Dorothy!! I would also love to know what happens next for Renee, Deek and her husband, Bill. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who likes mysteries, and even those that don't, but appreciate an intelligent read.

"Kudos" from an avid reader,

This is an excellent first novel! I saw a flyer w/Ms. Phaire's picture on it advertising Iuniverse.com and decided to purchase the novel online. I finished the book in 2 days! I loved Renee's character. So many "new authors" try to follow the normal fiction genre for African-American novels and it has really gotten out of hand. How many two-three-or four friend stories do we have to put up with before someone actually writes something worth reading? Ms. Phaire has definitely rescued us from the "hum-drum" of typical novels. The book's mystery kept me turning pages, while the sweet love story between Renee and the Detective made my heart swoon. It was good to see a story that steared away from male-bashing and air-headed women. My copy is well-worn from being lent out to friends. I am eagerly awaiting the seqeul-maybe Renee will try her hand at being a part-time sleuth this time! Ms. Phaire - thank you and good luck!

Almost out of Love is a Great mystery & romance novel. The imagination of the author is outstanding! I could relate with the characters & setting. Reading the book was like watching a good movie on a Saturday night curled up on the couch. I could not put this book down. Afer reading the book I purchased five copies to give as gifts to friends and family. I have told all my friends about the book and we will review it at our next book club meeeting. The book is exciting, its funny, its mystic, I could identify with the characters and with the setting. I loved reading this book! It is one of the best romance novel that I've read this year. Look out Jackie Collins another outstanding romance author is on the scene. What a outstanding first book! Looking forward to a sequel. Great Job Ms. Phaire! Joyce B.

Dorothy Phaire has done a remarkable job with this novel. The way she intertwined romance and mystery really grabs the reader and keep them hanging on until the very end. You will find yourself caught up and not wanting let go of the book, until you get to the very end. I can't wait for the sequel to Almost Out of Love.

Written with a Mature Audience in Mind,
This review is from: Almost Out Of Love (Paperback)
Based upon the recommendation of a friend I decided to give Almost Out of Love by Dorothy Phaire a chance. I really enjoyed this book. The story is set in Washington, DC where Phaire introduces us to two beautiful women. One is a psychologist and the other is the patient but they're both dealing with life and the issues that it brings along the way. Phaire has an engaged writing style which has you quickly turning the pages to figure out whodunit in this romance/mystery thriller. I loved how the characters jumped off the page, the contemporary themes and that this was a story which targeted mature, seasoned, sexy, 40something readers. No foolishness or over the top drama here just a solid, good read. Almost Out of Love is a delightful debut novel with surprising twists and turns which will keep you turning the pages into the wee hours of the morning as you try and read this novel in one sitting.

Very good read...,

Very good book. I enjoyed it thoroughly. I get the feeling that there's room for a sequel. Something unfinished about the very end with the cabbie adjusting his mirror. I would like to know if anyone else wondered why Courtney was in the book and what was it she had to say to Veda? Also, what happened to Deek's cell phone? Remember he had one in the beginning of the book but then later on he walked to the 7-11 to call his partner from the payphone? What year exactly was this in? Anyway, I'm so happy to read a romance/mystery novel with mature, sexy and 40+ y/o characters. I hate reading all those novels about the 20something group...been there and done all that. Excellent book...looking forward to the next novel. Blessings and continued success.

A GREAT ROMANTIC THRILLER!,
By Bernadette Y. Connor "author of Damaged!, The... (Philadelphia, PA) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Almost Out Of Love (Paperback)
Almost Out Of Love is a thought provoking new wave romantic thriller. The romance doesn't flow the way the world is willing to admit and the thrills definitely don't fit into any mold I've seen lately. For readers who love the challenge of guessing who the murderer is, this one's for you. For the reader who likes to see internal human conflict weave its madness in the lives of someone other than themselves, this one's for you. Dorothy has done a wonderful job in presenting this story. I would like to congratulate her on her first offering and encourage her to keep it coming.

Excellent first novel, strong characters,

First: I SUPPOSE it's a necessary evil to have books classified, labeled, and pidgeonholed. I certainly wouldn't classify this one solely as "Romance"; even "Mystery/Romance" doesn't tell the whole story. The characters seemed much more real, complex, and well rounded than just people motivated by the search for romance/love/sex with a murder thrown in. It's a disservice to put this one into that first two-dimensional category, in my opinion. The mystery/action elements are tightly plotted, well written, and well paced. The author, however, does not sacrifice character developement to the action; the crime doesn't occur until well into the novel, which is rare and refreshing. At that point, I'm totally interested in all of the characters, good and badÑthis is a technical point that works well. Halfway into the novel, I was compelled to keep reading until I got to its unexpected conclusion. I think that the characters are pretty universal, although their experiences of course were culturally shaped by being black. I guess I didn't see them just as "Black" because they were fully developed "People".

What a Read,

This review is from: Almost Out Of Love (Paperback)
I just finished reading a copy of "Almost Out of Love" given me by a friend. I must say I truly enjoyed it! The book read like a movie script & I could imagine it on the big screen. The characters were well-developed & the plot reflected the author's labor of love. I appreciated how the characters connected to one another. They weren't superfluous & just stuck there for "window dressing." If you like mystery, romance, & intrigue you'll definitely like this book. If you enjoy good plots filled with rich characters...go buy it now! I look forward to reading more of Dorothy Phaire's works.
