5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring book
This book was so inspiring! I read it cover to cover in one sitting, making for a warm and cozy afternoon. There's a nice variety of well-written stories. If you love your pets you'll love this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Much to my dismay, I really didn't like parts of this book.
I have, and have had, what seems like thousands of disabled critters, so I had very high hopes for this book. Sadly, these hopes were dashed. The book itself is of poor quality--there is no glue holding the cover on, and I may return it. The writing is of inconsistent quality (each story is written by a different author), and some include such adjectives as "deformed,"...

Almost Perfect is not just another warm and fuzzy collection of stories about pets. It is an important contribution to the millions of people who have pets and to those who are considering adopting one. Just as more and more people are adopting children with special needs and finding the experience a transcendent one of giving and receiving love, so are those who share their lives with disabled animals finding it profoundly heart-opening and spiritually joyful. The authors of Almost Perfect have a remarkable knack for conveying their relationships with these wonderful pets and I strongly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Five star inspiration, May 19, 2010
This review is from: Almost Perfect: Disabled Pets and the People Who Love Them (Paperback)
I bought this book because a friend had a story published in it. My friend lives on a Greek island where, besides being a wonderfully creative author, she has a gazillion pets. I expected to love her story. I did. I also loved every other story in the book. What a great treat. Great gift idea.

I met the author when I bought the book at the Collingswood Book Festival. She autographed a copy for me, and I couldn't wait to get home to read it. In fact, I curled up on the front porch that afternoon and read the whole book from cover to cover in just one sitting...well, I must admit that I did have to take a tissue break...definitely a "two tissue read!" I laughed, I cried...I was just so inspired by all of those animals and their humans! What incredible stories of stength, courage, tenacity and love! I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone whether they are an animal lover or not. It is a truly wonderful read! I'm hoping that Mary Shafer has a lot more stories to tell.

This book was very uplifiting and had wonderful, heartwarming stories. All of these animals portrayed have so much of a gift and lesson to teach all that even animal with disabilities can lead happy, healthy lives. People should take this to heart and adopt more animals from shelters and rescue groups - that have special needs. The animals are just that much more appreciative and fantastic. I previously owned one that had 1 ear and a condition called Degenerative Myelopathy (causes paralysis of the back legs). He was my soulmate!

This review is from: Almost Perfect: Disabled Pets and the People Who Love Them (Paperback)
Almost Perfect is MORE THAN PERFECT!!! With a reality check, these stories remind us of our true essence. The gifts that companion animals give to us are huge and these writers are touched deeply by them. This book is an easy read and is a beautiful gift for yourself or someone you truly care about. I enjoyed it immensely and it highly!

Mary Shafer has brought together a stellar group of tales recounting the joys of letting an "Almost Perfect" animal into your life. These dogs, cats, and even rats, who have what we humans might call handicaps, simply go on living and bringing delight to their two-legged friends. Whether their lives are long or sadly short, their stories will bring a smile - and perhaps a tear - to you. Highly recommended!
