5.0 out of 5 stars The Biggest Shock Ever
Everyone can sit here and write about how great this CD is, what song is there favorite, and how nice these guys are in real life. The fact is, none of those are true indicators of how great this album is.
Then how do you know? Look at the band behind the music. They defy every recipe for success the music industry has put out. No offense to anyone in the band...

3.0 out of 5 stars CD good, not Mercy Me's best
"Almost There" represents a good display of talent from a band that has been around the Christian music industry for a while; it is not their best work, though.
Lyrically and musically, the work is sound, but few songs really stand out as potential hits. "I Can Only Imagine" has done well, but the version on this album is not even the original...

Everyone can sit here and write about how great this CD is, what song is there favorite, and how nice these guys are in real life. The fact is, none of those are true indicators of how great this album is.
Then how do you know? Look at the band behind the music. They defy every recipe for success the music industry has put out. No offense to anyone in the band who may read this, but examine the evidence. The lead singer is a larger bald man with glasses. The band plays 100% pure Praise and Worship music. The lyrics are not dulled down at all for secular media. There's no multi-million dollar add campaign. No huge radio spots. No #1 video. Everything bands do these days, Mercy Me is not doing, and they've gone Gold. That's when you know this is a great album. And this album is.
There's two main factors driving this album that I believe make it as successful as it's already been. Musical quality, and more importantly, God. One listen to this CD clearly shows the bands heart for God. Absolutely everything is focused on Him with no intentions of anything more.
I own over 400 CD's, and this album jumped towards the top of my favorites list before the end of the first listening.
Everytime I listen to this album I get a sense that God had/has a plan for this album. Simply reading the other reviews proves this in my opinion. Look how many people are being impacted by this album, and the demographics it's reaching. If this album isn't God-inspired, I don't know what is. For this reason I say, don't just think about getting this album, get it. Don't even let the phrase, "I don't know if it's my style," enter your mind. It doesn't matter. You'll love this album, I promise.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Debut. I'm Sorry I Waited So Long, March 8, 2004

When Mercy Me released their first widely distributed CD in 2001, they exploded on the Christian music scene, especially with the hit single "I Can Only Imagine." I heard people raving about them at the time, but for some stupid reason, I didn't give them a try. I finally got this CD a few months ago, and I can see what all the talk was about.

The guys of Mercy Me have created a worship focused CD that is enjoyable as a regular CD as well. It kicks off with the upbeat "I Worship You," a perfect companion song to "Call to Worship" later in the disc. Their passion to worship is seen in these songs as well as such songs as "Cannot Say Enough," "How Great is Your Love," and "Fall Down." Yet all these songs are offered with an incredibly fun pop/adult contemporary sound and thoughtful lyrics that put it above many other modern worship albums.

"Here Am I," a song inspired by Isaiah 6, especially challenged me. It's a catchy tune that I find myself singing, but as I do, I have to ask myself if I really mean what I'm singing.

And of course there's "I Can Only Imagine." This song will be the group's signature song for years to come. Its powerful and thought provoking lyrics question just what our reaction will be when we finally get to Heaven. It's worth buying the CD for this song alone.

I've just been introduced to this group, and I'm already looking forward to picking up their other CD's. If this disc is any indication, Mercy Me will have a long and successful career ahead of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mercy! MercyMe a must own!, March 24, 2003

MercyMe's Almost There is one awesome worship album. Every song here is really a blessing from the Spirit of God. 'I Can Only Imagine' is getting air play on secular radio stations. With the impact this song has made, only time will tell that will bring other listeners to the Lord Jesus. If this group (backed by the phenomenal vocals of Bart Millard) has broken through truly this is an album to listen to.

The melodies are easy and soothing and the lyrics are full of passion. So astounding is 'I Can Only Imagine' that it moves one with hope. A Hope that one day for any believer that there will be eternal life after this life has passed away. I'm sure this will be one of the standard church worship song. 'Bless Me Indeed' is inspired by the Prayer of Jabez. It's genius sparks a genuine potential of the group's rising talent. Other songs that top off this album are 'Call To Worship' and 'How Great is Your Love.' If you like this check out their 'Spoken For' album and see what I mean about their influence along with SonicFlood of being maybe one of the top Comtemporary Christian groups in the future. Don't forget their video, Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow out on DVD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally Awesome, June 3, 2003

This cd is great! This is my first time ever hearing of the group, Mercy Me. I heard the song, I Can Only Imagine, at the movie theater and I had to find out more about this group. I have ordered both their latest cd and their old cd. I love the music and the songs are so spiritually uplifting. The songs also help bring you into the mode of worshipping the Lord. These songs will help begin part of my worship every morning when I get up. Thanks, Mercy Me for letting God use you to create this wonderful music and bring people closer to him! I can't wait for your next CD!

I love this CD. And what makes it even better is that they are young men for God. My boys love to listen to it... so I even ordered another one for them. Of course my favorite song is, I Can Only Imagine! What a wonderful song and them singing it, makes it even better. Buy it, you will not regret it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Right up there with the best of Christian Worship, August 27, 2003

I was in the gym working out when I heard this song (I can only imagine) played on the secular radio. The music is always played very loudly and when this song came on, I stopped doing situps for a second and just listened. I was astounded that such an awesome song was being played in such a secular environment and with such impact. I noticed people all around the gym floor stopping what they were doing and listening to it. Afterward, you could hear conversations taking place about the song and what people thought of it.

I couldn't believe it when I found out the band singing it was a Christian band. I'm just not use to such high quality coming from the Christian arena. This is the first CD I've ever purchased by a Christian band. Highly Recommend.

This song is just beautiful. I have been hearing it every day on the radio station that I listen to and I had to find out who sang it. It touches my heart every time I hear it. It is such a worship song and makes me thankful to have Jesus in my heart and life.

5.0 out of 5 stars GOTTA HAVE IT, October 25, 2001

What an awesome album. This CD is a must have. I have two of the older albums which are great, but they don't compare to Almost there. What powerful words they speak of God's love for us. The song I Can Only Imagine and Here Am I are dynamic. It makes you truly imagine being in God's wonderful presence. With dedicated artists like Mercy Me the powerful message of God's incredible love, mercy and grace are being spread.

4.0 out of 5 stars worth it for just one song, but there's plenty more..., March 7, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Almost There (Audio CD)
I had to have this album after hearing the song, "I Can Only Imagine" and the background behind why the song was written. The author's father died when the author was 19. For years, the author scribbled the line "I can only imagine" doodling on paper with his mind wandering. The night before this album was to be recorded, the author completed writing this song and it was recorded without much edit.

The song is about what happens when you die. It speculates on what you would think, what you would do when you have the pleasure of meeting Jesus. When I think of how this relates to my father, who passed away when I was a teenager, it brings tears to my eyes. However, it makes me very happy to picture my father meeting Jesus. It's a beautiful song and a great CD to buy today!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good stuff you can't argue with, May 2, 2003
This review is from: Almost There (Audio CD)
I'm not a big 'Contemporary Christian' music fan. My Mom was always really into it, but my Dad was all about Classic Rock. Naturally, I gravitated to Techno. Yeah, I don't understand that either. But this is unquestionably great worship music.

My big complaint with worship is it either is so slow it's depressing, or it's so happy go lucky that it loses meaning. MercyMe manages to walk the line between the two unflinchingly. They capture the energy of divine joy, but remain piously reserved.

My favorite track is 'I can only imagine' because of an experience I had with the song at a performance (a cover). The song ponders about what it will be like to meet God. I remember reading in C.S. Lewis' 'Mere Christianity' that since we are sinful creatures, being in the presence of God would be 'the great fear'. So, as the song was sung, I was thinking (not without a little cynicism) that it would be a fearful moment. Then it came to me that when I met God, I would be in my glorified body, that without sin. Suddenly, I dropped to my knees, crying. I was just overcome by that revelation that I couldn't stand. I just sobbed and sobbed on the ground and I was laughing, then crying, then I couldn't think of why I was crying, then I remembered and just started up again. It was this absolutely incredible moment.

MercyMe not only puts out solid music, but thoughtful lyrics too. It's truely great worship from men that truly love God.
