Oh,the memories!!!!!,
By Roland Dale Minor (Tuscaloosa,Alabama) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Aloha, Bobby & Rose (DVD)
I remember watching this movie when it came out and when i saw the dvd release i knew i had to have it. This movie has been stuck in my head for 17 years. It is not a great movie(it is good though) and it is a little overdramatic at times but i just love this movie. The soundtrack is just unbelievable. I also liked the way they placed little eva's "loco motion" right when they had the accident in the VW bug. They don't make movies like this anymore and i believe it caputured what it was like growing up in hollywood in the early 70's.

Has all the earmarkings of a bye-gone era in film,
This review is from: Aloha, Bobby & Rose (DVD)
From reading the opinions of my fellow reviewers, I am surprised by two things - the number of other people who actually remember this film, and the number of people who remember it so fondly. As a matter of fact, my husband and I - who grew up on opposite sides of the country - both saw it when it came out in 1975, could never find anyone else besides each other (and our respective dates at the time) who saw it or even ever heard of it, and both remembered it somewhat fondly. I think because it never caught on and is therefore encased forever within the year of its release it serves as a reminder of our youth. Thus, if you are younger than about 45, I would not recommend this movie.
This movie truly has a great soundtrack and a great use of music in the action itself. For example "Locomotion" by Little Eva plays during a horrific slow-motion car accident scene. Someone else has already mentioned "Benny and the Jets". The other thing I notice about this film, separate from my own personal nostalgia, is that it takes chances that none of the homogenized formula-driven movie studios would ever take in today's film industry. It sets out to be a cross between "Billy Jack" and "American Graffiti", and hits the mark on some points (the visual feel of the film, the soundtrack), and misses the mark on others (little characterization or depth in plot). My three star rating is therefore somewhat misleading. If you were a teenager or in your early twenties in 1975, you'll probably see this film as four stars for all the reasons I've given. If you are much younger or much older than that, you probably won't get it at all and for you it would be a two-star film. Thus, I split the difference at three stars.

overall good story line of a young mechanic in a impressive 68 camaro finding a woman he loves and both being apart of a instore holdup and being chased by the cops. VERY IMPRESSIVE CAR SCENES

Great B-Movie,
By "strat_massive" (connecticut) - See all my reviews

I saw this movie when it first came out, I was 16, and this was my first teen-movie. It's basicly a 70's teenager "make-out" movie, the kind where you bring your date to the movie primarily to "make-out" [kiss]. The movie is generally about nothing and basicly goes nowhere, but for me, that's the beauty of the film. We didn't have MTV back then, so I remember really enjoying the great sound track of the hit 70's songs of the day as Bobby and Rose drive around in Bobby's Camero. It's a movie that I could never forget and when I had the chance to buy it on DVD some 25 years later, I couldn't resist. Watch how Rose gives Bobby a thorough look over in the mirror of the pick up truck, it's cool. The title of the movie is clever, Rose's fantasy is to go to Hawaii, and "aloha" of course, means "hello" and "goodbye". In this movie Bobby and Rose meet [hello] and then part [goodbye]. This is the kind of B-movie you either love or dislike, I loved it.

Mushy Muscle Car Tale,NOT a Chase Flick!!,
By jimmy_rants@yahoo (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Aloha, Bobby & Rose (DVD)
There are no standout performances in this half car flick/half lovers-on-the-run yarn. But somehow it all delivers an interesting look into the dead end lives of a young couple who hook up by chance and enjoy something I used to love - wasting gasoline and seeing the sights. The America Bobby and Rose see is still there, it's just grown up and bigger, but it is pleasant to "ride with" the pair through 70's L.A and it's seemingly endless fast food, strip malls and fellow hot-rodders.
Seeing Bobby's 1967 Z-28 do a 360 to great Emerson,Lake and Palmer soundtrack is great as is the billboards of the era they pass while driving (Ringo, Rolling Stones' "Goat Heads Soup", Marvin Gaye) As their travels take them a little further from home, it's clear the film has no objective, just like all of our young lives may have felt at one time. Not my favorite ending, but worth watching.

Unforgettable,

I saw this little film when it came out. I was 13 and I've never, I mean never forgotten it - though I'haven't seen it since. I don't know why it has this effect, but it's fascinating that I keep reading about how it's stuck for so long with other reviewers all over cyberspace.
It really captures a seminal moment in time in America and the perfect soundtrack plays such an important role, along with the hot Camaro and perhaps the notion of Freedom - freedom from convention, from repression, from responsibility; I'd say this story portends the last gasp of free love, before the drugs and Aids and Reagan's corporatization of America made us too afraid to dream or love anymore. Perhaps it's the way the ideals of the 70's are effectively crushed in the third act of the movie, as our dog-eat-dog, 'personal responsibility', xenophobic, Big Brother Supply Side government crushed whatever we gained from the 60's and 70's. Timely now, I think.

Picture Needs Improving,
By Bill Rednight "60s Child" (Los Angeles) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Aloha, Bobby & Rose (DVD)
I've read all the reviews to date and no one - I mean no one - has mentioned the washed out quality of the film in a few places. I remember this movie as being vivid in its colors, but the DVD looks somewhat faded in comparison. This cries for a remastered DVD or Blueray, but seeing as this one probably isn't a big seller, you can rely on that happening as much as you can count on the filming of Aloha, Bobby and Rose II: Drift in the Valley starring Zac Efron. By the way, seeing Edward James Olmos as such a young Turk in Aloha is almost worth the price of the DVD.

Fantastic Memories,

Paul LeMat will probably always be John Milner from American Graffiti, and isn't really a very good actor. But what makes this film a favorite is the soundtrack, the shooting locales, and of course, the car. Having grown up in southern California many of the locations (especially Van Nuys Boulevard) bring back lots of great memories. If you like the music of Elton John, this film will be thouroughly enjoyable!

I was purchasing "American Graffiti " and this appeared as a "recommendation" so I purchased it and really liked it. I lived in and loved many of the movies of this era,but I don't recall ever hearing about this one. I enjoyed it,the story was interesting and I loved the main characters, played by Le Mat & Hull. Very realistic of that time and the music was great !

A film that grows on you...,
By
This review is from: Aloha, Bobby & Rose (DVD)
It's not the car chase film I thought it was going to be, but rather a road film that morphs into a twisted love story - cinematic dysfunction at its' 70's best. Plot is somewhat satisfying, but the acting is well done and sincere. Hull and Le Mat are a good match, but don't expect the same dynamic as in "American Graffiti." Tim McIntire gives the storyline the punch in the arm it needs...
Try to rent before you buy...if you can find it. A must for Le Mat fans, but some may be disappointed in the brief showcasing of Le Mat's 68 Camaro...too nice a car and too little screen time. Definitely a film that grows on you after several viewings - a real drive-in classic. |
