Prince From Another Planet

Elvis Aaron Presley was born to Vernon and Gladys Presley in a two-room house in Tupelo, Mississippi, on January 8, 1935. His twin brother, Jessie Garon, was stillborn, leaving Elvis to grow up as an only child. He and his parents moved to Memphis, Tennessee, in 1948, and Elvis graduated from Humes High School there in 1953.

Elvis’ musical influences were the pop and country music ... Read more in Amazon's Elvis Presley Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Elvis at the top of his game. February 14, 2009
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is one of the recordings that I have always had around. I bought my first copy from the RCA record club when I was about 12. It was this LP that first introduced me to Southern Gospel. J.D. Sumner and the stamps Quartet lifted this style of music to the stars with their hard driving harmony.
The crowning moment of this concert was "American Trilogy." I really don't think there are any pop singers around these days that would have the back bone to perform this kind of music in public: religous music mixed with a good measure of southern folk music thrown in! Purely controversial...LOL

5.0 out of 5 stars Elvis Aloha From Hawaii: In pre-historic sound December 1, 1999
Format:Audio CD
It is a great album but do not buy it.
Instead purchase: Elvis Aloha From Hawaii 25th Anniversary Edition
It has remastered sound, added tracks and added speaking parts by Elvis to the audience.
I would only give this origal disc 3 stars due to sound quality.

3.0 out of 5 stars 1998 Edition is Better, Cheaper August 14, 2013
Format:Audio CD
With new Elvis reissues on which I already have all or most of the material, I get the new reissue from the library to compare the mixing and mastering and overall sound to my older edition. Like several of these recent "Legacy" editions, the sound on the newer release of this classic album is markedly inferior to that on the older edition. There are three elements that make up this album:

1. Main Concert. For the main concert from January 14, they seem to have used the original 1973 mixes that were done in a hurry. Yes, they are remastered, but that can't change poor balancing of instruments and a muddy overall sound. The 1998 edition Aloha from Hawaii via Satellite is a clear, modern remix by the excellent Dennis Ferante from the original multi-track tapes. I put both CDs (1998 and 2013) in my stereo and played them back to back several times. 1998 is clearer, has better definition of instruments, more piano, and most importantly more Elvis. Also, I see that that edition is currently selling for $7.00 brand new from Amazon.

2. Five Bonus Songs. The 1998 edition also has far superior mixes of the 5 bonus tracks that were recorded late, late at night after the audience had left. I saw a lot of complaints about the sound of those 5 tracks on this edition in other reviews and I heartily concur. They seem to have pulled these masters from the scattershot compilations on which these performances were originally issued (Mahalo From Elvis, anyone?) rather than using the clean, clear 1998 remixes. As with the main album, this is a baffling and frustrating choice to the longtime fan.

3. Warmup Concert.

I have always liked this album, but I recommend that you buy the newer version with extra tracks and dialogue added. As it is, this is still a great live Elvis performance from 1973. The set is 22 songs long, and also features the traditional "Also Sprach Zarathustra" introduction and a track of Elvis making introductions of the band. Standouts here are led by the best version of "I Can't Stop Loving You" in history: the vocals are powerful, and the band is in top shape, with particular kudos going to the drums and horns. Also strong are "Burning Love," "Steamroller Blues" (even though it's tongue-in-cheek, it's still great), and "A Big Hunk O' Love," which Elvis introduces by saying simply "Big Hunk," a line that always makes me laugh. On the down side is the simply appalling version of "Hound Dog" featuring guitar work that is reminiscent of an unpleasant pre-disco funk that does not compliment the song in the least.

This is a great CD overall, but I would look out for the newer release with more material for essentially the same price. Elvis fans will love this performance, and overall I give it four stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE GREATEST LIVE CONCERT ALBUM EVER April 4, 1999
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Of all the live ELVIS concert albums, this has got to be considered the best. The song selection was magnificent and Elvis does them all with a special flavor which was his and his alone. Close rivals to this album was the LIVE AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN & THE '68 COMEBACK SPECIAL,but neither of these approaches the scope of the ALOHA special. To me, the defining song it this album was AMERICAN TRILOGY and, of course, my all time favorite, his closing CAN'T HELP FALLING IN LOVE. Never a better locale for that song than Hawaii itself..from whence the song was an integral part of the BLUE HAWAII soundtrack.

Listen to his great hits like HOund Dog, Burning Love, Johnny B. Great time in music history!
