5.0 out of 5 stars An American Treasure November 9, 2002
Format:Audio CD
My wife and I saw Darrell with former New Grassers Sam Bush and John Cowan in Somerset (not too terribly far from Harlan County), Kentucky, in 1998. Neither of us had ever heard of the New Grass Revival (get their stuff, too) and we knew nothing of Darrell. Darrell did two of his songs (accompanied by these two newgrass gods) for that show. We were immediately taken with "Harlan," especially since we both have deep Eastern Kentucky roots. The performance was one of the best I've ever witnessed, and I've seen Miles, Dizzy, the Stones, Michael Hedges, and a ton of great acts. These guys blew all of that away! We HAD to find out who they were (John's voice is incredible and Sam is a fantastic showman) and buy the rest of their stuff - and we have since then. We took a chance and bought Darrell's disc at the show and were gratified to learn that it was probably one of the best impulse buys we've ever made. Darrell's music is authentic, uniquely American, personal, and exceptionally well-crafted and well-played. One reviewer noted that this was a low-buck project, but you cannot tell. The polish (never more than necessary) and attention to detail is worthy of some of the best (over)paid artists in music-dom today. Buy all of his albums before Nashville decides to syndicate him! I cannot recommend his work enough. We've given this and his second album as gifts to friends of varying tastes and ages, and it has always been well-received and played until the grooves are worn off the disc. In case you haven't already noticed, Travis, the Chicks, Garth, and many, many others have covered songs from this and his other two albums. If anyone deserves to get rich and fat from their work, it is definitely Darrell Scott. Read more ›

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure music that touches the soul July 6, 1999
Format:Audio CD
I consider myself fortunate to have recently stumbled accross this CD by Darrell Scott. Not only is he an extremely talented singer and instrumentalist - he also has the ability as a song-writer to reach out and touch the listener. Particularly of interest to me was "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive" as it helped me to visulaize my own grandparents living in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky and the struggles they went through. With upbeat songs like "Head South" and "It's a Great Day to Be Alive", I find myself humming the tune and singing throughout the day. Again, not enough can be said about Darrell's skills on the various instruments he plays. I would recommend this CD based on the instrumentation alone!

4.0 out of 5 stars It all starts here November 2, 2001
Format:Audio CD
The first time that I heard Darrell Scott was on the wonderful "Reel Time" CD with Tim O'Brien. Shortly after that project was released, I got to hear the two of them at a concert in Michigan. WOW!
This project contains the original versions of two of the best songs ever written in American music: "Never Leave Harlan Alive" and "Great Day to be Alive." It's the "ying and yang" of our lives.
There's just a lot of truth here. Darrell's work has a profoundly spiritual quality beneath a wry and poignant sense of humor. This is certainly a low budget "indie" project but Darrell's talent is just so overwhelming that it overcomes any weakness in the production.
I think that Darrell has a lot in common with Buddy Miller- it's a darn shame that talent and experience like this doesn't attract more attention from music buyers. In one word, I would describe Darrell as "authentic." He's the real deal.

5.0 out of 5 stars BLEW ME AWAY! July 30, 2002
By Buff
Format:Audio CD
Darrell Scott is awesome! I first heard him at a Opry Plaza Party in Nashville. What a performer! I knew then I had to have his CD's. I got Aloha from Nashville and was not let down. The CD is full of great songs. This guy does it all. I really like You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive since I am from KY myself. It's a Great Day to Be Alive is a great song as well. Travis Tritt had a huge hit with that song. I believe everyone can relate to that song. You may also remember Heartbreak Town
since the Dixie Chicks did that one. It is just a great album. Highly Recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful listening from beginning to end! May 10, 1999
Format:Audio CD
I attended a Sam Bush concert in Hickory, N.C. in 1998 and was expecting John Randall Stewart as the guitar player. Not to take anything away from John (he's very talented) but having never heard Darrell Scott play or sing, my wife and I were blown away. Darrell provides you with an unbelievable feeling when you hear him sing and/or play. His music is the way music is supposed to make a person feel. I promise you, any music purchased that has even a hint of Darrell Scott in it is worth every penny.

4.0 out of 5 stars Haunting lyrics, heartfelt renditions July 2, 1998
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Had the good fortune to run into Darrell and Tim O'brien in none other than Cardiff Wales back in March of this year. What a live performance which included many of the tunes on Scott's current CD. "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive" is worth the price of the CD alone. His audience in Cardiff was particularly taken by this song about Harlan County KY coal mines given the closure of the coal mines outside of Cardiff.
