This review is from: Aloha: My Love to You the Story of One Who Was Born in Paradise (Paperback)
There would be no reason to read this book if you have not already read Born In Paradise. Born In Paradise was a heartwarming and joyful look at Armine Von Tempski's life growing up on the Haleakala Ranch from the age of about four until her father's death when she was in her early twenties. The stories of her father, Maui, the paniolos on the ranch and her siblings were very engaging and I wanted to know more, so as soon as I finished BIP I ordered Aloha which picks up where the other autobiography left off. I was happy to learn what became of Armine and her sibling's following her father's death and Armine and Lorna's efforts to turn their ranch (actually owned by Baldwin and others) into a guest ranch and take tenderfoots (tenderfeet?) through Haleakala on horseback. Unfortunately, the writing is much drier and the stories less engaging, in fact, some are quite pedestrian. Armine wrote that she lost much of her zest for life after her father's death and it even seems as though writing about that period was more a necessity than a joy.
