5.0 out of 5 stars Good old fashioned talent, October 7, 2004

I loved this album from literally the first bars of the first track, Outlaws. I was acquainted with Luke only through his work on Sarah McLachlan's tours over the last 10 years. I picked up Aloha, Manitoba at one of Sarah's shows a couple of months ago, curious to hear Luke's own sound. It's fantastic.

The songs were all somehow familiar to me even though I'd never heard them before. Over time, I've realized that they sound familiar because Luke has perfectly captured the mood of particular genres of sound while making each song his own. "New York"'s music is jazzy and sounds like syncopated '60's to me. "Mitzi's" is bluegrassy; "Leroy" is straight blues; and "The Anxious Ballerina" is beautiful, sad music juxtaposed to bitingly funny lyrics.

If you appreciate talent, I highly recommend this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank you Canada!, October 22, 2003

I would like to thank Canada for another talented artist.

I was introduced to the music of Luke Doucet when he was filling in for Greg Keelor on the Blue Rodeo American Tour. They allowed him to open with a few songs from his solo album. I was a fan after the first song.

Luke is very talented on the guitar and his song writing skills are excellent. He produces a very unique sound. It is blues, rock, and alternative country mixed into one. There is something for everyone. I really love what he does with classic rhythms.

I would strongly recommend this album to anyone who enjoys Canadian rock. He is a strong newcomer in the genre.

I would also like the John Mayer, Josh Kelly, Jason Moraz fans to check out this album. Luke Doucet is a real musician. If you like the industry produced wannabes, you will be blown away by this guy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Lyrics, February 13, 2003
This review is from: Aloha Manitoba (Audio CD)
Often, I find that music falls into one of two categories 1) that which has no lyrical value, while the voice is fantastic and 2) that which has awesome, thoughtful lyrics, with a less powerful voice to back them up. I value music in the second category much more than the ear candy of the first. True, the greatest music combines both categories into a super-breed of music, but that is incredibly rare. Aloha Manitoba proves that Luke Doucet can hold his own in this breed of music. Luke Doucet's lyrics are contemplative and brooding at times and overall fantastic. This CD is a great listen and well worth the $15.98 that is an atrocious sum to spend on most other music.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Solo Debut, July 1, 2001

Luke Doucet's solo debut is an engaging listen that, if it doesn't grab you immediately, certainly rewards subsequent spins. A great mix of alt-country, pop, and rock, I honestly can't recommend this album highly enough to those with at least a passing interest in the aforementioned styles. If you like this album, check out Luke's work with Veal (markedly different, but also great!)
