Aloha Corson Hirschfeld !,
By Stod Rowe (Cincinnati, Ohio) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Aloha, Mr. Lucky (Hardcover)
What a first novel ! This well conceived story never lets you down and makes for quick enjoyable read. Corson brings to life the language and flavor of Hawaii that only a devotee could bring to the forefront. His characters are as real as they are compelling. You will be left intrigued by the past of this island paradise that clearly has more to teach us about its culture, archaeology and its flora and fauna. Corson weaves a wonderful yarn. Best read on the beach or headed there. You will learn a lot about the culture and ethnology of Hawaii by reading this book.

A Great Read,
By Karen Jobalia (Ohio) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Aloha, Mr. Lucky (Hardcover)
I found myself laughing out loud many times as I read this delightful book. It was not only funny and well written, it carried a punch. The build up was wonderful - a real page turner - and the ending was great. I'll be waiting with anticipation for the next novel Hirschfeld puts out. This one was a slam dunk.

leave 'em laughing,
By A Customer
This review is from: Aloha, Mr. Lucky (Hardcover)
This is one of the best capers I've ever read. I laughed for pages at a time. The prose is so polished, the plot so tight, and the characters so well limned that I found it difficult to believe that it is a first novel. Comparisons are inevitable, so I will skip them (although, hint: what writer has the same initials?). One thing that set this book apart was that there is a great deal of Hawaiian mythology and natural history woven through it, and I learned quite a bit. Enjoy!

Aloha, Mr. Lucky,

What a great read! Hirschfeld drew lively characters. Star is a delightfully laid-back protagonists and the villains combine menace and hilarity in equal measures. Hawaii is the perfect setting for the fast paced action. I learned a lot about the environmental concerns of Hawaii and enjoyed every minute of it. Hope to see a lot more from this new writer.

Adventure in Hawaii,
By David George (Los Angeles, California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Aloha, Mr. Lucky (Hardcover)
Aloha, Mr. Lucky opens in Waikiki. Star Holley is running a personals ad scam and doing his best to stay one jump ahead of a loan shark out for blood. When one of the women Star meets turns up dead on the beach, he is drawn into a life-threatening but increasingly spiritual adventure that takes him and his companions to a remote valley on the Big Island of Hawaii. Clever plot which brings together a colorful cast of initially unrelated characters. Funny, quirky, informative, fast-moving. Read it!

Great mystery and adventure in Hawaii!,
By Denise Eaden (Atlanta, GA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Aloha, Mr. Lucky (Paperback)
I read this book on a trip to Hawaii so I particularly enjoyed the detailed stories of Hawaiian myth. In additon, Hirschfeld creates unique characters, introduced one by one, whose lives come together in a bizarre adventure of good guy, bad guy, and treasures sought. I laughed a lot, held my breath, and learned a few things from this wonderful debut novel. Who knew I could find two of my favorite things (comedy and suspense) in one book!

It's NOT literary, although a fair read,
By King Kamehameha (Kona, Hawaii) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Aloha, Mr. Lucky (Paperback)
Corson is brilliant at times, coming up with similes and situations that remind me a little of Hunter S. Thompson. But he's so intent on lecturing about his "extensive" knowledge of Hawaiian history, wildlife, and legends through the mouths of various characters that he loses points on characterization because they all sound alike! The plot was interesting but, for some reason, I already knew what was going to happen in almost every chapter, except for the Kohe part. The romance between Caddy and Starr was just left dangling at the end and I got the feeling that Corson himself was getting bored or under pressure from his publisher to finish up and start another book.

Fascenating,
By Carl Morris (Cincinnati OH) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Aloha, Mr. Lucky (Hardcover)
Never has Hawaiian lore become so facenatingly absorbed. Star Holley bungles his way through a series of threats, a dog-napping, murder and a stab at romance. Corson Hirschfeld gives us one intriguingly, raciously funny read.

Not Exactly Hiassen or Leonard,

This review is from: Aloha, Mr. Lucky (Hardcover)
The author makes a valiant attempt to remind readers of the quirky and offbeat characters of Hiassen and Leonard novels, but doesn't quite pull it off. I never really cared what happened to the main character, Star.
