5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best albums I have ever heard, December 17, 1999
This review is from: Alone But Never Alone (Audio CD)
As a lover of acoustic and electric instumental music, I have to say that this is one of the best albums ever made. Every song is beautifully played and recorded. The songs range from upbeat jazz to the contemplative. Although Larry has said he was tempted to use his electric guitar at one point, I am glad he chose to go all acoustic. I have been disappointed with other so-called 5 star acoustic instumental albums reviewed here, but I guarantee you that you will LOVE this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars BEST ACOUSTIC GUITAR CD EVER!!, July 15, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Alone But Never Alone (Audio CD)
This is perhaps my favorite album of all time. Larry Carlton played his Valley Arts acoustic for the entire album and there is not a single note from any electric guitar. The songs are so smooth and emotional while being technically challenging to try to play (I tried and failed). To top that, the recording is crystal clear. When you are stressed out or just want to relax. Pop this CD in and let it bring you to another world. Thanks Larry!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best accoustic smooth jazz guitar albums ever!, December 25, 2001

Larry Carlton goes all accoustic on this album and it is a terrific one. This album was really popular in the late 80s but it is timeless. Smiles and smiles to go is a classic and plays on smooth Jazz stations often. But the whole album is great. Like the track 'Pure Delight', that is what this album is...

5.0 out of 5 stars Larry's Very Best, March 4, 2006

What can I say .. I think this is the very best album Larry ever put out. The song "Perfect Peace" is such a moving composition, that I have decided to have it played at my funeral. The popular tune "Smiles and Smiles to Go" is a real joyful track, and if you are ever in dull spirits, it is like medicine.. refreshing to the innermost parts. Awesome album .. nuff said !!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-have for every music lover, December 31, 1999
This review is from: Alone But Never Alone (Audio CD)
This CD is for everyone whether you enjoy Pop, Rock, Jazz, or Classical music. The melodies wrap you in a feeling of serenity while lifting your spirits. Every time you listen to this music you will remember where you were the first time you heard it. It's wonderful whether you find yourself in a traffic jam, are feeling blue, or just want to impress someone special. It is definitely a tribute to Larry Carlton and his amazing talent.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorites..., March 19, 2001

this is perhaps the ONLY Larry Carlton album that I can listen to over and over again...and I have been doing just that since the album came out on vinyl many years ago. My favorite cut is "Perfect Peace", and one has to listen to it on a quality stereo to appreciate it fully. The whole album is gorgeously recorded, and that is important for audiophiles like me. I recently bought the CD version (one of very few albums that I feel I want both formats)...it's good, but cannot compare to the vinyl version. I wish Larry would make another like this; "DISCOVERY", the follow-up to "ALONE" is truly disappointing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Carlton Classic, February 5, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Alone But Never Alone (Audio CD)
I 1st bought this album just after it came out over 20 years ago. I recently re-purchased it + it's even better than I remembered it. This is Larry Carlton playing acoustic instead of electric, but you wouldn't know it. He is one of the premeir guitar players ever + probably one of the most tastefull artists I've ever heard.

The music is very easy going + peacefull. Great for driving or just relaxing at home. If your a Larry Carlton fan, it's a must have addition to your collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Albums I've ever owned, April 25, 2010

For my money, this and Steve Winwood's "Back in the High Life" were the finest recordings of an otherwise weak decade for music. I purchased "Alone/But Never Alone" on cassette tape back in 1987, at a music store in Milwalkee, WI.

It was the first "Larry Carlton" record that I purchased. The only reason I purchased the tape was because I was very impressed by Carlton's playing on the song "Josie" (from the Steely Dan "Aja" LP. Of course, I was hooked from the very beginning with the song "Smiles and Smiles to Go".

This is probably Carlton's finest work. Carlton's "Fingerprints", from a few years back, is a great companion piece. BTW, the only song I have problem with is "High Steppin". It's not that I don't like the song. It's just that I don't think it belongs on this album. So for my media players, I always omit it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Perhaps His Best, December 24, 2005
This review is from: Alone But Never Alone (Audio CD)
I have been a huge fan of Larry Carlton for years. His career has taken him several directions. But, I find his acoustic music to be his best. My favorites on this CD are Smiles And Smiles To Go, The Lord's Prayer, and Perfect Peace. The only bad thing about this CD is that is too short. This is some of the most relaxing guitar music out there. Purchase this one...you will be glad that you did!!!
