5.0 out of 5 stars Hank at his darkest & most morbid, October 12, 2000
This review is from: Alone & Forsaken (Audio CD)
This is the side of Hank that rarely comes up for air on Greatest Hits comp's. Instead of focusing on what's been around 20 times before, Mercury chose to give us songs that define the lonesomeness that dominated so much of Hank's music. Who can't listen to "Alone & Forsaken" & not cry? Or feel they're at death's door when they hear this dark version of "The Angel of Death"? On "Please Don't Let Me Love You", Hank begs to be stopped from having an affair he so desperately wants, asking "where are the dreams I once knew?". For those not wanting to dive off in the deep end and buy "The Complete Hank Williams", this serves as an excellent sampler of Hank's darker side.

5.0 out of 5 stars A little-known, Dylanesque side of Hank Williams., March 9, 1999
This review is from: Alone & Forsaken (Audio CD)
This great disk represents the bluesy, down-hearted side of Hank Williams. In the documentary film "Dont Look Back" we are treated to a young Bob Dylan singing some Hank Williams tunes for his backstage friends; both songs are on this album ("Lost Highway" and "So Lonesome I Could Cry"). It seems that the elder songwriter was an influence on the younger. Lyrics like those of "Alone and Forsaken" could be taken from "Oh, Mercy" or "Time out of Mind":

We met in the springtime when blossoms unfold\ The pastures were green and the meadows were gold\ Our love was in flower as summer grew on\ Her love, like the leaves, has now withered and gone\

The roses have faded, there's frost at my door\ The birds in the morning don't sing anymore\ The grass in the valley is starting to die\ And out in the darkness the whiporwills cry.

The demos toward the end are just Hank and his guitar. Without the band they may strike some as a little thin sounding. Not me though. Great album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hanks Best....., February 14, 2003

I love every song Hank Williams has ever sung that I know of. And this CD gives me a chance to listen to some MORE of his great songs. Its not just the same re-produced CD with the same songs like "Your Cheatin Heart","Honky Tonk Blues",etc. along with the other songs. Don't get me wrong I love those songs, its just that they are on every Hank CD that comes out. Finally I get a chance to listen to some other songs. This CD is some of Hank's Best. "The Angel of Death","I heard that Lonsome Whistle", & "I saw the light" are the top 3 songs, but all of the songs are though!
