4.0 out of 5 stars Music is Good, Message is Not
I'm sure every fan of Catch 22 (real fan, that is) has listened to Alone In a Crowd and liked it. To tell the truth, the music isn't bad. So Tom was kicked out, the stuff is still pretty good. And then you put the white cd into the stereo, and the first track is just whatever. Then the second starts to sound pretty good, and you like it. But please, do NOT like that...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not nearly as great as Keasbey Nights
When I first heard this CD, I was a bit dissapointed. They lack the energy that they had in 'Keasbey Nights'. After Tom Kalnoky (the lead singer) left the band they seemed to have gone downhill. The lyrics and vocals are weak, the guitar and bass isn't as good, and the horn section isn't as strong, but the drumming is still amazing. There are a few good songs, like 'It...

And then you put the white cd into the stereo, and the first track is just whatever. Then the second starts to sound pretty good, and you like it. But please, do NOT like that song.

Hidden within the lyrics of the song are subliminal messages, aiming at making fun of Tomas Kalnoky, the genius writer of C22's original album "Keasbey Nights". It is sickening to hear the hate that is thrown out at him.

But you will be happy to know that in his next amazing piece of work, Streetlight Manifesto's "Everything Goes Numb", he takes out his own little fun. Listening to "A Moment of Silence", one will hear a line that is like this..."if you hate me so much then stop singing my songs."

I would like to say, Catch 22, continue to make good music, but keep your feuds to yourselves, because you threw out one heck of a musician.

The lyrics and vocals are weak, the guitar and bass isn't as good, and the horn section isn't as strong, but the drumming is still amazing. There are a few good songs, like 'It takes some time' and some others, but it does NOT compare to 'Keasbey Nights'. You should get this anyways, but if you are just getting into Catch 22, get 'Keasbey Nights".

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Cd Ever Bought, September 19, 2003
By A Customer

Catch 22 is my favorite ska-punk band and its because of this cd. "Hard to Impress" has to be the best song I've ever heard. The horns wail on this song. If your sick of the same old sounding ska, check this cd out. It takes Ska to a whole new level. Buy this cd. It is fricken Sweet

Ska/Ska-core/Ska-punk, whatever the hell it is called, this is an incredible cd. Not necessarily my "type" of music, but a CD this good can be enjoyed by more than just ska fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent followup album, possibly superior to the debut., April 6, 2005
This review is from: Alone in a Crowd (Audio CD)
Deftly avoiding the sophomore jinx, a restructured Catch 22 (sans original members Jamie Egan, Tomas Kalnoky, and Josh Ansley, adding bassist Pat Kays, guitarist Pat Calpin, horn player Mike Soprano, and Jeff Anderson on vocals) returns to the ska-punk sound that made 1997's "Keasbey Nights" a standout.
"Alone In A Crowd" builds on the darker, more violent themes of the band's earlier work, slamming death, regret, failure, abuse, neglect, and violence into thirty-three minutes (minus three minutes of dead air hiding a bonus track) of pure energy. Some of the tracks ("What Goes Around Comes Around", "Point The Blame", "Arm To Arm") easily equal or even surpass the "Keasbey"-era work, and the album never drags. A punked-out cover of the Beach Boys' "Sloop John B" adds a needed spot of brightness to the album's major thematic movement, the tale of two young lovers caught up in murder and mayhem in middle America. This album is reckless, ruthless, and an absolute blast to listen to. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Five stars isn't enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Catch 22 - Alone in a Crowd, September 21, 2002
This review is from: Alone in a Crowd (Audio CD)
This is an excellent CD for fans of C22. I loved Keasbey Nights, and while some of the songs on this CD are quite different, I liked them just as much, if not better, than the songs on Keasbey Nights. My fav songs from this CD are Bloomfield Avenue, Wreck of the Slooth John B, San Francisco Pay Phone, and Point the Blame. Great Cd for fans of one of the best ska bands ever.

Catch 22 is a truly energetic band out of New Jersey. They have been a driving force in hte newest waves of Ska. I actually bought this CD over a year ago from them at a show but when i was on reading reviews I felt compelled to write a review. It is very sad to say that as i am writing this, Jeff has moved on to other things. I saw them at ashow not too long ago and they still rock. This CD is truly a step forward fo rhte band and shows how much the style is progressing. C22, Keep it UP!

5.0 out of 5 stars Catch 22: 2nd only to Slapstick., March 14, 2002

I'm sorry, but Slapstick is my favorite band of all time. Catch 22 is definitely a close second though, and the reason is because of this CD. Keasbey Nights is just...too...I dunno, there's not a lot of energy in it. The singer's great, but the band's just...there. This CD remedies this though. The songs have much more Oomph in them, even with the new singer. Apparently, the singer quit, and now the horn players take turns singing the parts. This is by far the best Catch 22 CD out there. I had to give up a chance to see them live at the SF Pound, but my friends assure me that it was an excellent show. BUY THIS CD!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars what happened to the first singer?, December 17, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Alone in a Crowd (Audio CD)
well i would like to start off by saying this album is not bad by any means as it has some great songs on it. However, the new singer doesnt make the songa as lively as the last one. and 'keasbey nights' was much more varied than 'alone in a crowd' as far as the sound of thr band goes. so again, not necasarily bad, but a disapointment for me as a catch 22 fan.

4.0 out of 5 stars Catch 22 is back, November 30, 2000

Well what can i say, this album is good. In fact its better than the majority of the ska-punk out there. But its nowhere near there first album Keasby Nights, which is one of my favorite CD's ever. The new singer, while not bad, just doesnt have the fire of the old one. And at times the record, seems overproduced, giving it a hollow sounds. Sometimes I might think the horns were synthesized if I knew they weren't. But I do like the use of the string section on Bloomfield Ave. I'm not saying the CD is bad, just not AS good as their first one. But I would still recommend it to any fans of ska or punk. And Catch 22's live show is amazing, so check em out! Peace and Unity. ~J.
