More About the Author

A product of an ethnically diverse family, I have lived most of my life in the Río Grande Valley of south Texas, where I divide my time between writing, editing, and teaching at the University of Texas Pan American.

The Texas Institute of Letters recently awarded my book FLOWER, SONG, DANCE: AZTEC AND MAYAN POETRY the Soeurette Diehl Fraser Award for Best Translation. I am the author of several other books, among them MEXICAN BESTIARY (an illustrated encyclopedia of legendary beings from Mexico) and THE SEED: STORIES FROM THE RIVER'S EDGE. In August, Ink Brush Press is releasing my first book of original poetry, SHATTERING AND BRICOLAGE. Later this year, Lamar University Press will publish BORDER LORE, a volume of my retellings of south Texas folktales, some of which were originally collected in the e-book CREATURE FEATURE.

Additionally, my work has been published or is forthcoming in various periodicals, including TRANSLATION REVIEW, EYE TO THE TELESCOPE, JAMES GUNN'S AD ASTRA, INTERSTICE, HUIZACHE, CONCHO RIVER REVIEW, BORDERSENSES, ILLYA'S HONEY and RED RIVER REVIEW. Among my editing credits are the Along the River anthology series, the newly illustrated STORIES THAT MUST NOT DIE reprint series, DONNA HOOKS FLETCHER: LIFE AND WRITINGS and the magazines FLASHQUAKE and LA NORIA LITERARY JOURNAL. My book review column TOP SHELF appears each Thursday in THE MONITOR, a regional newspaper.
