More About the Author

A product of an ethnically diverse family, I have lived most of my life in the Río Grande Valley of south Texas, where I divide my time between writing, editing, and teaching at the University of Texas Pan American. In August 2013 Lamar University Press published FLOWER, SONG, DANCE: AZTEC AND MAYAN POETRY, a collection of Mesoamerican verse I translated after a few years studying Nahuatl. I am the author of several other books, among them MEXICAN BESTIARY (an illustrated encyclopedia of legendary beings from Mexico) and THE SEED: STORIES FROM THE RIVER'S EDGE. Lamar University Press will be publishing in 2014 a volume of my retellings of south Texas folktales, some of which were originally collected in the e-book CREATURE FEATURE.

Additionally, I've had work published in various periodicals, including TRANSLATION REVIEW, EYE TO THE TELESCOPE, JAMES GUNN'S AD ASTRA, CONCHO RIVER REVIEW, BORDERSENSES, ILLYA'S HONEY and RED RIVER REVIEW. Among my editing credits are the Along the River anthology series, the newly illustrated STORIES THAT MUST NOT DIE reprint series, DONNA HOOKS FLETCHER: LIFE AND WRITINGS and the magazines FLASHQUAKE and LA NORIA LITERARY JOURNAL. My book review column TOP SHELF appears each Thursday in THE MONITOR, a regional newspaper.
